Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic can't be called surprising anymore, but they keep on winning.

John Amaechi scored 24 points and Darrell Armstrong added 23, leading the Magic, a team of NBA castoffs and perennial backups, to a 107-97 victory over the defending champion San Antonio Spurs.

"We might not have the big names, but we've got guys that come out every night and lay it on the line," Magic forward Ben Wallace said. "And that's what wins. We've got guys willing to play defense for 48 minutes, that's how you win ball games."

The Magic scrambled on defense, trying to contain San Antonio's twin towers -- David Robinson and Tim Duncan -- with constant double-teams, and outrebounded the taller Spurs, 40-29.

Bo Outlaw added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic, who improved to 6-0 on their eight-game homestand. Orlando maintained its two-game lead over the Milwaukee Bucks in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks defeated the Chicago Bulls, 92-73.

Robinson scored 30 points, hitting his first 10 shots and 12-of-14 overall, but he got little support. Reserve guard Antonio Daniels scored 14 points, Duncan had 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting and nine rebounds and Jaren Jackson had 13 points.

"We did a pretty good job on Tim but David got off a little bit," Amaechi said. "We definitely wanted to shut both of them down but just didn't."

"At the beginning of the game I thought we set a nice tone, and I thought we would play well," Robinson said. "We just didn't maintain that in the fourth quarter."

The Spurs lost their second straight after winning five in a row, and remained one game behind the Phoenix Suns for fourth place overall in the Western Conference. The Suns lost at home to the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers tonight.

The Magic squandered a 13-point first-quarter lead, but went on a 12-4 run in the fourth quarter to build a 93-78 advantage following a 3-pointer by rookie Chucky Atkins with 5:41 left.

"Orlando did a good job of keeping up the defensive pressure," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They have young legs and it is tough to win on the road win the home team shoots 54 percent."

The Spurs fought back to within 97-91, when Duncan hit a pair of free throws with 1:44 left. But Amaechi connected on the left baseline and, after Daniels hit just one of two from the line for the Spurs, Atkins sank a jumper from the top of the key to give Orlando a 101-92 advantage with less than a minute to play.

"Another win -- we'll take it," Armstrong said. "Don't care how they come. We just come out and play hard and compete. That's what we're doing right now."

The Magic built a 29-16 lead in the first quarter behind eight straight points from Armstrong, including a pair of 3-pointers. Orlando led 29-18 after one quarter, but the Spurs went scored 11 straight points early in the second, tying the score at 40-40, and by halftime led 53-51.

Spurs guard Mario Elie played just eight minutes. He rolled his ankle when he stepped on Robinson's foot coming down with a rebound.

"We will know more tomorrow, about how it feels," Popovich said. "But he will not play tomorrow night."
