Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson got to put his toe on ice for most of the fourth quarter as the Philadelphia 76ers needed only three periods to dispose of the floundering Atlanta Hawks, 107-86.

Iverson, who has been nursing a sore right toe, scored 30 points on 13-of-25 shooting in 40 minutes as the 76ers avoided a season-high fourth straight loss. Philadelphia moved one-half game ahead of idle Charlotte for the all-important fourth spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

"It really bothered me at the beginning of the game before it got loose," Iverson said of his injury. "It's frustrating because it hurts so bad, it's hard for me to push off of it. I'm not moving at the pace that I want to move in."

Iverson had eight points during a decisive 25-13 third quarter for Philadelphia, which has won three in a row against Atlanta this season and can complete a season series sweep when they visit the Hawks on April 14.

"We stepped up our defense a little bit more than we had been," Iverson said. "A team like that is hard to beat at this time of the season. They're not in the playoffs. Their job is to be the spoiler and knock us out of the position to get homecourt advantage."

Iverson watched most of the final period from the bench with a pack of ice planted on his toe. Philadelphia visits Boston on Friday.

"I don't think (the toe) is going to be a problem," Iverson said. "I'll bring 110 percent, regardless if I practice or not."

Rookie Dion Glover scored 18 points for the Hawks, who have lost four in a row and 10 straight on the road.

Tyrone Hill scored 21 points, Theo Ratliff had 12 and 10 rebounds and Toni Kukoc added 10 points, eight rebounds and nine assists for the Sixers, who shot a season-high 70 percent (14-of-20) in the first quarter to take a 32-22 lead.

Philadelphia finished at 55 percent (46-of-84) from the floor, held a 45-38 rebounding advantage and forced 14 turnovers.

Dikembe Mutombo had 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Hawks, who were without leading scorer Jimmy Jackson due to tendinitis in his left knee.

Bimbo Coles scored 13 points, LaPhonso Ellis had 12 and rookie Jason Terry 11 for Atlanta, which shot 45 percent (34-of-76).

"You've got to stay upbeat," Terry said. "You've got to say, `It could be worse than this.' You want to work on your individual game and get better."

The Hawks stayed within 56-53 at halftime, but Ratliff made a layup and Hill knocked down a 10-footer to spark the Sixers to a big third quarter.

Ellis' 16-footer pulled Atlanta within 63-59 with 7:13 left in the period before Philadelphia went on an 11-2 run, capped by Iverson's layup that stretched the advantage to 74-61 with 2:23 remaining in the third quarter.

Iverson made two jumpers and a pair of layups in the fourth quarter to give the Sixers a 96-77 lead with six minutes to play before taking the rest of the night off.

Hill went 9-of-11 from the floor, burying his last eight shots. He also left midway through the fourth period as Philadelphia coach Larry Brown emptied his bench down the stretch.

"We pretty much wore them down," Philadelphia center Matt Geiger said. "When they went on a dry spell, we took the lead and did a good job of holding it."

"We just could not get it going in the third quarter like we did in the first half," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "Suddenly we're slow-footed and we're holding onto the ball too long."
