Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett scored 28 points, rookie Wally Szczerbiak added 23 and both players keyed enormous runs for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who coasted to their ninth win in 12 games, 112-90 over the lowly Los Angeles Clippers.

The Timberwolves (46-29) set a franchise record for most victories in a season, established two years ago when they finished 45-37. They moved within one-half game of fifth-place San Antonio in the Western Conference.

Szczerbiak scored eight points and Garnett five during a 17-6 second-quarter burst as Minnesota opened a 59-42 lead with 61 seconds left before halftime.

Garnett had 16 points in the half and Szczerbiak 14, including 10 in the second quarter, as the Wolves settled for a 61-47 advantage at the break.

"We've become a better team over the season and that's the key" Szczerbiak said. "We're going into every game trying to learn something. That's the sign of a good time and why we have a good record."

"The wins are nice and we have to keep it going," Garnett said. "I want to say we were arrogant or cocky (at the start of the season), but we were feeling pretty good about our team. We've made a committment to being a very good team."

Minnesota shot 57 percent (26-of-46) in the opening 24 minutes and had a 19-3 cushion on fast-break points. Maurice Taylor scored 13 points in the half for Los Angeles, which shot 49 percent (16-of-33).

Minnesota scored the first 13 points of the second half to assure the Clippers of their 11th straight loss. Szczerbiak netted seven points and Garnett added four for a 27-point lead as the Wolves improved to 3-1 against Los Angeles this season.

"(Szczerbiak) played extremely well," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "He got his shots off and he ran the floor well. What I thought we did really well was that we converted off the break. We didn't sit back and let them play how they wanted to. We were aggressive from the beginning."

The Timberwolves nailed down their 12th win in 15 contests against the Clippers by outscoring them, 52-37, over the second and third quarters. Minnesota owned a 48-36 advantage on points in the paint and a 23-7 cushion in fast-break points.

Terrell Brandon had 11 points and 13 assists for Minnesota, one game after sitting out with the flu. Anthony Peeler scored 10 points off the bench and Radoslav Nesterovic grabbed 13 rebounds to help the Timberwolves gain a 45-31 advantage.

"We set a franchise record for wins and we're proud of that," Peeler said. "We have respect for (the Clippers) because they beat us at home, so we weren't going to take them lightly. We wanted to jump on them from the start."

Maurice Taylor scored 23 points with Eric Piatkowski adding 13 and rookie Lamar Odom added 11 for the Clippers, who shot 46 percent (30-of-65) from the field. Taylor shot 8-of-13 from the field and Piatkowski 5-of-11.

"We wanted to attack the paint, try to go inside out and try to penetrate," Clippers interim coach Jim Todd said. "We tried to press a little bit more. We did have some more energy in the second half."
