Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning and the Miami Heat halted the red-hot Charlotte Hornets in their tracks -- literally.

Mourning scored 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 17 rebounds as the Heat used their best defensive effort of the season to overcome their second-worst offensive output, pulling out a 76-70 victory over the Hornets.

Charlotte had its seven-game winning streak snapped and matched its season-low point total. The Hornets suffered a 72-70 setback against San Antonio on February 24.

Mourning seemed to be the only player in any type of offensive rhythm, burying 12-of-21 shots for the Heat, who were outscored 15-13 in a laughable third quarter but recovered in time to post their fifth straight win and 18th in 19 home games.

"It was a tough grind defensively," Mourning said. "We weren't rolling offensively. We came back to the Heat of old by relying on our defense to win the ballgame. We had to make tough shots to get over the top. It was a collective effort where everybody did what they had to do to get a win."

Miami maintained a two-game lead over second-place New York in the Atlantic Division.

Anthony Mason had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Charlotte, which did not score 20 points in any of the first three quarters and managed 21 in the fourth. The Hornets fell one game behind idle fourth-place Philadelphia in the race for homecourt advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

"My mother told me, `If you have nothing good to say then don't say anything at all.' The less that can be said about this game, the better," Mason said.

Ironically, the Heat also won their worst offensive showing of the season, a 74-72 triumph over Utah on December 22. Mourning had 17 points and 10 rebounds in that contest and truly took the game over in crunch time tonight.

He made a short hook shot in the lane and an eight-foot jumper to give the Heat a 58-49 cushion with 10:36 to play and made a free throw, a follow shot and a four-footer to make it 71-59 with 2:53 left.

"(Mourning) is going to come with it every night," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "This is what it's all about. You have to rise to the occasion at these times and he did."

Mourning also blocked six shots, giving him a career-high 272 this season.

"When you're not making shots offensively and turning the ball over and are able to win, it is because of defense and rebounding," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Our defense has made great strides the last couple of weeks."

Dan Majerle scored 12 points for the Heat, who matched their season-high five-game run from November 5-14. Jamal Mashburn scored nine points, Tim Hardaway six and six assists and rookie Bruce Bowen added nine points off the bench for Miami, which shot 42 percent (31-of-74).

"It was an ugly game for both teams offensively, 76-70 is not exactly a barnburner," Majerle said. "It was an old-fashioned win for us. We did a lot on defense by holding them to 70 points. It was ugly, but we'll take them anyway we can. We've gotten back to playing Miami Heat defense."

The Heat matched a franchise record with their 30th home victory and have held opponents below 20 points in five of the last seven quarters.

"We can win in a variety of ways and I think that in this league you have got to do that," Miami forward P.J. Brown said after managing just three points in 29 minutes.

Eddie Jones and David Wesley scored 12 points apiece and rookie Eddie Robinson added 10 for Charlotte, which shot 31 percent (25-of-81) and lost the battle on the boards, 50-41.

"Hopefully, we won't have another game shooting like that," Jones said. "We thought we played good defense. All we needed to worry about was putting the ball in the basket and rebounding."
