Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The last time out, Patrick Ewing took his lumps. Tonight, he dished them out.

Ewing scored a season-high 30 points, including six in the final 2 1/2 minutes, helping the New York Knicks hold off the Washington Wizards, 101-92.

The 37-year-old Ewing was completely outplayed by Shaquille O'Neal on Sunday in a 106-82 loss to the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers. O'Neal blocked Ewing's first shot of the game and held him to 14 points on 6-of-17 shooting, while the All-Star center scored 34 with 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Tonight, Ewing worked over 6-9 Jahidi White, hitting 10-of-15 from the floor and 10-of-10 from the line. He also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots. It was Ewing's first 30-point game since he went for 37 on March 30, 1999 at Indiana.

"I had a pretty good night shooting the ball, especially after the way I shot against the Lakers," Ewing said. "Shots that I normally hit didn't fall. Tonight I had the groove."

The Knicks should not have needed Ewing's late-game heroics, but let the Wizards cut a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to 94-88 with 2:53 to go.

"They made a game of it, but we had enough to hold them off," said Ewing, who hit four straight free throws, had an offensive rebound and scored on a dunk down the stretch.

"I am concerned with our team," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "As a team we are just not playing like we need to play going down the stretch. I am just really concerned individually and collectively. We have certain guys playing well on certain nights, but our team is not playing well. We are always disjointed."

Marcus Camby added 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Knicks, who stayed two games behind first-place Miami in the Atlantic Division. The victory evened the season series with Washington at two games apiece.

Ewing and Camby took advantage of the fact the Bullets have no real center and an undersized front line, but White, who like Ewing is a Georgetown alum, tried to make it tough.

"It was very physical," Ewing said. "Jahidi was trying to kill me. Jahidi has a big body and he was using it."

Allan Houston scored 11 of his 13 first-half points in the second quarter, helping New York stretch a 23-22 edge after one period to 56-39 at the break.

Mitch Richmond netted 23 points for the Wizards, who had won seven of their previous nine games.

Rookie Richard Hamilton scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, sparking Washington's comeback.

"We just didn't make shots, and when we don't make shots, it's tough for us to win," Washington coach Darrell Washington said. "I'm satisfied with our effort in the second half. I kept telling our guys we could get back in this game."

New York was without backup point guard Chris Childs, who was suspended two games for his fight with Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant in Sunday's setback.

The Knicks also lost forward John Wallace, who injured his ankle during the shootaround. Van Gundy said Wallace was playing one-on-one with Kurt Thomas, but stepped on Thomas's foot and turned his ankle. He was put on the injured list before the game.
