Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- An overnight trip from Miami to Charlotte did not do much to stimulate Eddie Jones and the suddenly stagnant offense of the Charlotte Hornets.

One night after their worst offensive output of the season, Jones and the Hornets looked lifeless from start to finish as the Detroit Pistons continued their surge to the postseason with an easy 97-82 victory behind 23 points by Jerry Stackhouse.

The Hornets had a seven-game winning streak snapped with an embarrassing 76-70 loss at Miami on Thursday and did not look very eager to get back on the winning track tonight. They fell behind 28-22 after one quarter, trailed 56-38 at halftime and never seriously challenged thereafter.

Jones, the Hornets' leading scorer and top all-around player, managed just 12 points against the Heat and had just six on 2-of-8 shooting tonight as Charlotte coach Paul Silas opted to use his reserves for most of the second half.

"This was a tough game," Jones said. "Tonight we came out and couldn't do anything right. We don't need to worry about bouncing back. We just have to put all of the negative things out of our heads. We can't dwell on this. Tonight was just tough."

"I knew Eddie didn't shoot well last night, so I just wanted to come out and make him earn his shots," Stackhouse said.

The Hornets slipped two games behind fourth-place Philadelphia for home-court advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

"We just haven't made the shots," Silas said. "When your starting lineup is 12-for-40, it's hard to beat anyone. We didn't get back on defense, but it wasn't just defense. We just couldn't make baskets. We won seven straight, but now we've lost two in a row. We need to find a way to get it back. At this times of the season, we should be picking it up and we're not."

Stackhouse scored 17 first-half points, including three 3-pointers during a decisive 14-2 burst that gave Detroit a 54-34 cushion with 2:21 remaining in the first half.

John Crotty scored a season-high 14 points off the bench and Grant Hill added 13 in 29 minutes for the Pistons, who have won four in a row and 12 of their last 17 games to remain one game behind sixth-place Toronto in the East. Detroit also is just one game ahead of the surging eighth-place Orlando Magic.

"We were a little fresher tonight than Charlotte," Hill said. "They are a big and powerful team and we are quick and depend on our full-court game. We did a good job defensively and played real unselfishly and trusted each other on both ends of the court."

Rookies Baron Davis scored 14 points and Chucky Brown added 10 as Charlotte reserves outscored the starters, 49-33. The Hornets shot 38 percent (30-of-79) and were just 3-of-14 from 3-point range, while watching the Pistons bury a season-high 11 3-pointers.

Stackhouse established a season-high by knocking down six shots from beyond the arc. Lindsey Hunter scored 12 points for Detroit, which shot 43 percent (35-of-82) and scored 19 points off turnovers.

"We are playing very well at this point," Stackhouse said. "We just have to keep this going the next several weeks. I had a lot of open shots and was able to knock them down. We are going to have to play collectively like we did tonight to continue this run."

The teams battled to a 48-48 draw on the boards, but the Pistons held a 42-20 advantage in points in the paint and beat the Hornets, 24-13, on the break.

"We jumped on them early and they couldn't recover," Detroit interim coach George Irvine said. "You could tell they were tired from playing last night. They looked like they had heavy legs."

After Brown's 15-footer pulled Charlotte within 40-32 with 5:19 remaining in the first half, Stackhouse connected from 24, 23 and 26 feet on consecutive trips, giving Detroit a 49-32 cushion with 3:48 left.

"We made a run early and kept playing good basketball and didn't look back," Hill said.

Davis made two from the line, but Crotty made a layup and a 3-pointer to make it a 20-point bulge 2:21 before halftime.

"They came in and took it to us," Charlotte guard David Wesley said. "They did what they had to do. That's the bottom line. We did not respond. I feel like we will be ready Sunday (vs. Indiana)."
