Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Vince Carter had 23 points and nine assists and Tracy McGrady added 21 points to lead the Toronto Raptors to a much-needed 104-84 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Carter and McGrady each scored nine points in the opening quarter and contributed to a huge third quarter which saw the Raptors take over the game.

Toronto, which has struggled mightily of late, won for only the second time in 10 games. The Raptors remain one game ahead of seventh-place Detroit but drew within one game of fifth-place Charlotte, which lost to the Pistons tonight.

"We got our confidence back," Carter proclaimed. "We were able to accomplish the goal of getting a win and getting back on track. That's speaking from one game and that's hard to do but I like our chances right now. It was a much-needed win and I think the guys responded tonight."

"We played with a lot more intensity than we did the previous games," McGrady said. "We just showed a lot of heart. We were down at halftime but we came out in the second half and got a lot of defensive stops. Defense was the key tonight. We're trying to pull a sinking ship back up."

McGrady scored four points during a 7-0 run that gave Toronto a 57-54 lead with 8:21 left in the third quarter. It held a 65-60 lead midway through the period when veteran sharpshooter Dell Curry collected eight points and Carter added three to highlight a 13-4 spurt, extending the lead to 78-64 at the 1:19 mark.

"Curry's a great shooter -- you don't leave him," Hawks coach Len Wilkens said. "What happens when you do leave him, he shoots a 3. That really hurt us and their experience really showed.

"The third quarter has been a nemesis for us," Wilkens added. "We prepare, we're ready for it, we now it's coming and you just have to go out and make shots. I don't know how to make shots from the bench."

Atlanta scored the last five points of the period and the first basket of the fourth to cut the deficit to 78-71 but Toronto responded with a 10-2 burst to open an 88-73 advantage with 8:13 left.

Alan Henderson scored 24 points for the Hawks, who hold a 16-3 lead in the all-time series but have dropped three of the last five meetings.

The Raptors shot 60 percent (12-of-20) in the opening quarter to take a 28-25 lead but cooled off dramatically in the second, allowing Atlanta to take a 47-45 lead at halftime.

Toronto took its largest lead, 102-79, on a 3-pointer by Curry with 1:42 to play. Curry finished with 14 points.

Leading scorer Jim Jackson, who missed the last game with tendinitis in his left knee, scored 14 points for the Hawks, who have lost 19 of their last 23 games.

"I bet you never dreamed it would be like this," Wilkens said. "I certainly didn't. I have to laugh to keep from crying."

Muggsy Bogues scored 13 points and Antonio Davis had 11 and 11 rebounds for Toronto, which shot 53 percent (41-of-77) from the floor and hit 15-of-18 free throws.

Rookie Jason Terry collected 14 points and seven assists and Dikembe Mutombo had 11 and 15 rebounds for the Hawks, who shot 41 percent (33-of-88) and yielded 19 points off turnovers.

"In the third (quarter), we didn't make the defensive adjustments," Terry said. "They ran plays for Vince and we kind of stepped out and helped a lot and he rolled for the jumper. It just happened so quick that we couldn't make the adjustment."
