Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Going through some lean times, the Toronto Raptors looked at the Chicago Bulls, saw filet mignon and feasted.

The Raptors ran out to a nine-point lead in the first five minutes and never let the lowly Bulls into the game, working inside and outside for a 98-79 victory.

Tracy McGrady scored six points in a game-opening 13-4 charge capped by Vince Carter's 3-pointer with 7:37 to go in the first quarter. The closest Chicago got thereafter was five points.

The Raptors led 29-20 after the first quarter as McGrady repeatedly went to the basket, scoring 13 points.

Toronto was up 37-28 early in the second period before Dee Brown nailed three 3-pointers in an 11-0 run that extended the bulge to 44-28 with 4:17 left in the half. The lead never dipped below double digits again.

"They jumped on us early, they made tough shots and that was the story the whole night," Chicago rookie forward Elton Brand said. "Individually it's hard to match up with them. It's tough to stop McGrady and Vince Carter, especially on the perimeter."

McGrady and Brown finished with 19 points apiece and Carter added 17. McGrady and Carter added five assists apiece, and Muggsy Bogues had eight assists.

"I always said (McGrady) would stat out across all categories," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "He's one of the best talents in the league. He's the best 20-year-old in the league, that's for sure. He has maturity well beyond his years."

Rookie Ron Artest led Chicago with 17 points and Brand added 16 and 11 rebounds. Bulls veteran Hersey Hawkins scored nine points in the first quarter but was held to four the rest of the way.

"Elton plays hard and not like a rookie," Vince Carter said. "He has caught on early and has confidence. I told him to just keep it going. He's going to be a good player for this team for a long time."

The Bulls had dealt a serious blow to Milwaukee's playoff hopes with a 90-88 victory on Thursday but could not pull off a repeat performance against Toronto, which has struggled down the stretch.

Toronto's 104-84 victory over Atlanta on Friday was just its second win in 10 games. Tonight's win lifted the Raptors two games ahead of seventh-place Detroit and within a half-game of fifth-place Charlotte with seven games left.

The anemic Bulls have failed to score at least 100 points in 20 straight games, last reaching that plateau on March 2 against Cleveland.

Hawkins gave the Bulls a good start, stealing the ball from Antonio Davis 13 seconds into the game, but it was all downhill from there. Artest missed a jumper and Davis hit one. Brand missed a jumper and McGrady hit one. Will Perdue missed a layup and Carter dunked, giving Toronto a 6-0 lead.

McGrady had a dunk and a layup, Carter hit a 3-pointer and the Raptors were on their way.

"This was not one of our better efforts," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We did not get back on McGrady and Carter early on. Dell Curry and Dee Brown really hurt us. ... This was not a good defensive effort tonight. We were a step slow."

The Raptors took their largest lead at 60-35 on a jumper by Charles Oakley with 10:53 left in the third quarter. The Bulls got no closer than 14 points thereafter.
