Game StoryCLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Chalk it up to exhaustion. Or maybe it was the rookie.
Rookie guard Andre Miller, assigned to All-Star Grant Hill, held him to 11 points on 4-of-18 shooting and the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled away in the second half for a 117-98 victory over the run-down Detroit Pistons.
"We had some good rotations," Miller said. "Guys came out to double-team them and kind of got them out of their game. They had to pass the ball or turn the ball over, so it was a good team effort."
Lamond Murray scored 11 points and Wesley Person had five in the third quarter, when the Cavaliers outscored the Pistons, 31-21. Shawn Kemp led the Cavaliers with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Murray and Bobby Sura scored 21 apiece.
"It's one of those things -- we've lost so many games that you don't want to end the season with that empty feeling," Kemp said. "You try to end it on a good note. I think that's basically what we are trying to do. We're trying to end the season on a good note and even if we don't win the game, at least we're going out and playing hard."
Jerome Williams scored 19 points, Jerry Stackhouse 14 and Michael Curry 13 for the Pistons, who were playing their fifth game in seven days and coming off a 97-82 victory at Charlotte. Detroit shot just 36 percent (32-of-89) from the field.
"I think we're pretty tired," Pistons interim coach George Irvine said. "When you're that tired, you have to play smarter. And we certainly didn't play smart. Cleveland was in the same position. They played a back-to-back. Our team is tired. We've played five games in seven nights, but this is the first poor game we've played, I think."
The Pistons (40-36) had a four-game winning streak snapped and dropped two games behind Toronto and into a tie with idle Orlando for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
"They did a good job and you have to give them credit," Hill said. "They did a good job defensively and forced us to do things that we really didn't want to do. They played well and deserved to win."
"It was a perfect opportunity to get closer to where we want to be and we blew it, basically," Stackhouse said. "I don't think it's anything that will hang over us. We'll come back and try to get a win against Minnesota (on Monday) and we'll be fine."
The Cavaliers led 60-57 early in the third quarter before Murray and Kemp carried them on a 7-0 surge that gave them a 10-point lead. Cleveland never let Detroit get close thereafter.
Sura scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Cavs stretch the lead.
Miller finished with 10 points and seven assists, Danny Ferry scored 11 points and Person 10.
John Crotty scored 11 points and Lindsey Hunter 10 for Detroit, which besides Minnesota faces Miami, Philadelphia, Indiana and New York before closing out with cellar-dwelling Chicago.
"We just didn't have it tonight," Hill said. "We didn't have the extra stuff that was needed to win. It was a good week. It was a tough game tonight, assuming how well we played last night against Charlotte.
"We get a day to recover and start off next week positive."
