Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Larry Hughes scored 28 points and Jason Caffey added 25 as the Golden State Warriors won consecutive games for the first time since February with a 109-97 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Mark Davis scored a season-high 25 points and tied a career-best with 12 rebounds for the Warriors, whose first back-to-back wins since February 18-20 come on the heels of an 11-game losing streak. They beat the Grizzlies at home for the eighth time in 10 encounters.

"As we limp to the finish line and you get a couple of efforts like that from your guys, you're proud of them," Golden State coach Garry St. Jean said. "It's easy to say, `Poor me, poor us.' But I just really feel good about these guys."

Michael Dickerson scored 24 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim contributed 23 and 13 rebounds for Vancouver, which has lost three in a row.

"Everything we did in the first three quarters, we stopped doing in the fourth," Abdur-Rahim said. "Those things got us into a situation where we could have won the game."

The loss was the first under new owner Michael Heisley, whose purchase of the team was approved today by the NBA Board of Governors.

Although the Grizzlies jumped out to a 12-5 start, Golden State trailed for the last time by two points after Hughes made two free throws with 8:56 left to move the Warriors to 60-58. He followed with a jumper to tie the game at 60-60.

Golden State held a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter before going on a 14-2 run, taking a 92-79 advantage on a dunk by Davis with 7:18 remaining. The Warriors' lead never dipped below 10 points thereafter as they went on to claim the season series, 3-1, and improved to 14-5 all-time against Vancouver.

"Vancouver left me open and I made some shots," said Davis, who recorded his first double-double and is averaging 21 points and 8.5 rebounds over his last two games. "They made things happen. They were rotating off of me and pulling the double, so you just have to make them pay. I'm playing the way I normally play if I get minutes."

"Mark Davis became a Hall of Famer," Vancouver interim coach Lionel Hollins said. "He probably solidified a six-year, $64 million contract tonight courtesy of the Vancouver Grizzlies."

Adonal Foyle collected 14 points and four blocked shots and Mookie Blaylock dished out 10 assists for Golden State, which is shooting 52 percent (86-of-167) from the field over the last two games. Tonight marked the first time the team has shot over 50 percent in consecutive games since February 2-4.

Othella Harrington had 14 points and Mike Bibby chipped in 12 and nine assists for the Grizzlies, who shot 51 percent (39-of-76) but allowed 25 points on 16 turnovers.

Golden State won its first game (1-23) when its opponent shot 50 percent from the field.

"If we start out good, we can usually ride it out. But if we get off to a slow start in the fourth quarter, it doesn't work for us," Hughes said. "But we hung in there. We took care of the ball, managed the clock and played to the end."
