Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Rookie Kenny Thomas and Cuttino Mobley led a fourth-quarter surge as the Hosuton Rockets rallied for their fourth straight win, 103-93 over the Denver Nuggets.

Thomas and Mobley each scored six of their 15 points in the final period, when the Rockets held the Nuggets to 15 points and used a 15-2 run to take control down the stretch.

"I wish I could credit their excellent defense but we missed layups and wide-open jump shots," said Nuggets coach Dan Issel, whose team shot just 6-of-18 in the fourth quarter. "And we let that affect the rest of our play."

Mobley and rookie Steve Francis scored four points apiece in the burst, which turned a 91-87 deficit into a nine-point lead. A basket by Mobley capped the run at 102-93 with 1:27 remaining.

"We are understanding our spacing and finding the open guys on the floor," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Our guys feel they can beat anyone after this last week."

Walt Williams continued his strong play with 23 points for the Rockets (32-46), who have won four in a row for the first time since winning six straight from January 13-23.

"My coaches have confidence in me and that's a big help," said Williams, who was 4-of-4 from 3-point range. "I'm in a nice rhythm right now."

Francis collected 13 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for Houston, which had seven players in double figures. Francis' technical foul with 6:50 to go triggered the decisive burst.

"It was a boring game," said Francis, who made 6-of-15 shots. "I couldn't get excited about anything. I didn't shoot it well but I passed it well. We didn't play very aggressive and I was tired."

"It's a comfort to a coach when someone is not at his best and we can still win on the road," Tomjanovich said.

Nick Van Exel totaled 27 points and 11 assists for the Nuggets (31-47), who fell behind the Rockets into sixth place in the Midwest Division with their fourth loss in five games.

Denver shot 42 percent (37-of-89) and was outrebounded, 52-37. Houston shot 45 percent (36-of-80), including 7-of-16 from 3-point range.

"We started missing shots," Van Exel said. "They were pushing the ball more and making us play transition defense. They got to the foul line more and were running more and that was the difference."

Francis scored nine points in the first quarter as Houston took a 22-16 lead. Williams scored 17 points in the second period as the Rockets maintained their six-point lead at halftime.

The Nuggets rallied to take the lead in the third quarter behind Van Exel's 12 points. Denver carried a 78-74 advantage into the final period.

Shandon Anderson scored 13 points for Houston. Raef LaFrentz scored 16 points and Keon Clark added 14 for Denver.
