Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics never had much of lead, but they had it when they needed it.

Kenny Anderson scored a fast-break layup with 2:44 left to put Boston ahead and Paul Pierce's 3-pointer with 2:05 to go was enough to make it stand as the Celtics played spoiler to the Orlando Magic's playoff drive, pulling out a 95-91 victory.

Orlando led most of the way but never was up by more than six points while Boston's biggest advantage was only four. In the second half, the Magic took their largest lead, 76-70, when Darrell Armstrong hit a free throw with 59 seconds left in the third quarter.

"We played a team that didn't have any reason to play, but they certainly came out to play tonight," Orlando coach Doc Rivers. "We let them hang around and hang around, and once it got to the six-minute mark, we knew we were in for a dogfight."

Danny Fortson kept control of the boards at both ends of the court down the stretch, and the Celtics did not allow Orlando a point after Ron Mercer's layup with 3:40 to play.

"We knew we could get back into this game and, really, it was Fortson at the end who was really the whole game," Celtics forward Antoine Walker said. "It was a physical game tonight, and that matched his style."

With less than three minutes to go, Walker stripped Mercer and flipped an outlet pass to Anderson, who outraced the field for a layup that gave Boston a 92-91 edge.

The Magic could not find the hoop and on the Celtics' next possession, Anderson drove to the basket. As the Magic converged to try to close off his path, Anderson passed to the left corner to Eric Williams, who swung the ball to Pierce waiting at the curve of the arc. Pierce lofted a rainbow that put Boston up by four for the first time in the game, 95-91, with 2:05 left.

The defensive pressure of both teams picked up and neither scored again the rest of the way.

"They played with reckless abandon," Orlando center John Amaechi said. "They definitely fought hard in the end. We did not execute to match that."

Fortson came off the bench to score 23 points and grab 14 rebounds in 27 minutes. Walker finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Tony Battie scored 13 points and Pierce added 12.

Amaechi led Orlando with 22 points, Mercer scored 14, Darrell Armstrong 13 and Monty Williams 11. Amaechi also grabbed nine rebounds.

With the loss, the Magic (39-39) slipped into a tie for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with Milwaukee, which edged Cleveland. Orlando also fell two games behind seventh-place Detroit, which blew out Miami.

"It's fun to play the role of spoiler, but we'd rather be on the other end," Walker said.

The Magic play three of their final five games on the road, where they are 14-24 mark this season. They host Milwaukee on Monday.

"We've come this far -- we're not mental midgets, we're not just going to fall to pieces," Amaechi said. "We've got games to win at this point and I believe we have a positive feeling going into the last few."

Boston (32-46) has won its second straight after a season-high 10-game skid, matching the second-longest losing streak in franchise history.

"It's nice to win two back-to-back games like this, after those 10 straight losses," Walker said. "I have the feeling we could beat almost any team and we're not going to quit now."
