Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose scored 24 points and the Indiana Pacers finished strong, denying the Toronto Raptors their first postseason berth and moving closer to clinching the top seed in the Eastern Conference with a 77-73 win.

Trailing 67-61 with 7:12 remaining after Tracy McGrady drained a 12-footer, Rose and the Pacers took control. Rose scored 10 fourth-quarter points, including six during a closing 16-6 burst that gave Indiana its ninth straight home victory against Toronto.

"You've got to be aggressive out there," Rose said. "There was a point in the game, it seemed like the mood was a little bleak in the arena and we all felt it. Guys were getting me the ball in position to make plays, and that's just what I was trying to do."

"We struggled the whole game," Indiana coach Larry Bird added. "But there is no question our defense won it and Jalen got the ball in the hole. Things weren't going our way, but we somehow figured out a way to win it."

Central Division-leading Indiana (52-26) moved two games ahead of Atlantic Division-leading Miami for the top spot in the East with four games remaining.

"It would be disappointing at this point in the season not to be the first-place seed," Rose said. "We've been the best team all season. It would be like taking a step backward."

Toronto had a three-game winning streak snapped and is sixth in the East. The Raptors could have clinched their first playoff spot if Charlotte lost to Atlanta, but the Hornets blew out the Hawks.

Vince Carter scored 28 points for the Raptors but threw up an airball on a potential tying 3-pointer with 10 seconds to play.

"They made the big shots at the end and we didn't, so it's history," Carter said. "I felt I could make my shots down the stretch, they just wouldn't fall for me. This was a win we really needed in our column. We just have to go back to the drawing board."

"I know everytime I play against Vince Carter, I'm going to be the underdog," Rose said. "So I have nothing to lose in that situation."

Toronto's Tracy McGrady had a great all-around effort with 19 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists.

"We need someone else besides Vince and Tracy to step up and contribute," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "Tonight, everyone knew what was at stake. Our guys were diving on the floor and giving everything they had to help us win."

After McGrady's jumper gave the Raptors a six-point advantage, Rose was good from 16 and 20 feet on consecutive trips. Vince Carter buried a 12-footer but Austin Croshere made a layup and Reggie Miller put the Pacers ahead to stay, 70-69, on a 3-pointer with 4:24 remaining.

"We cannot continue to put ourselves in a hole and have to dig out," Croshere said. "You can't always dig out."

Rose made two free throws, Carter answered with a driving dunk and Dale Davis hit a 10-footer to give the Pacers a 74-71 lead with 2:51 left.

Neither team was able to score until former Pacer Antonio Davis made two from the line to shave the deficit to 74-73 with 22 seconds remaining. But Croshere made three free throws down the stretch as Indiana held on and improved to 17-2 all-time against Toronto.

"You have to give them credit," Antonio Davis said. "They're in first place in the Eastern Conference. We knew it was going to be a tough game. We have been fighting ourselves for the past 2 1/2 weeks. And I'm just happy to see we didn't quit."

The 73 points were the fewest allowed by Indiana this season as the Pacers held Toronto to a measly 33 percent (27-of-81) shooting.

Croshere scored 15 points, Dale Davis had 12 and 14 rebounds and Miller added 12 points for Indiana, which shot 38 percent (29-of-76) and yielded only six points off turnovers.
