Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone keeps adding highlights to his Hall of Fame career.

Malone collected 27 points and became the only player in NBA history to score 2,000 points in 12 straight seasons as the Utah Jazz continued their mastery of the Los Angeles Clippers with a 102-93 victory.

Malone scored the milestone bucket on a uncharacteristic jump hook with 5:50 left in the third quarter. Playing his 15th NBA season, Malone surpassed Michael Jordan, who accomplished the feat 11 times. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the league's all-time scoring leader, reached 2,000 points nine times.

"I'm fortunate to be around a group of guys who believe in my ability," Malone said. "Thank God I've been injury-free. It's one of those things that when I'm finished playing, it will mean a whole lot. But when you're playing the game, you don't want to bask in what you do, it's about the team."

"I think everybody, sometimes even myself, takes him for granted," long-time teammate John Stockton said. "You just expect things out of him every night. It's kind of nice to just sit back and appreciate what he does every night, every year. He's something special."

While the game featured an all-time first, the outcome was quite familiar. Utah ran its winning streak over the woeful Clippers at the Delta Center to 22 games, while extending Los Angeles' overall skid to a season-high 14 games.

The Jazz snapped a two-game slide and swept the four-game season series.

Eric Piatkowski scored a career-high 35 points for the Clippers, who have four losing streaks of at least nine games this season. Their last win at Utah came on April 18, 1989.

"I feel as though lately I've been shooting the ball really well," Piatkowski said. "I got an awful lot of shots that I normally don't get and once you knock a couple down you kind of feel like they're all going to go down."

The Clippers (14-64) own the worst record in the NBA, trailing the Chicago Bulls by 3 1/2 games with four remaining.

Malone scored 10 points and the Jazz shot 67 percent (14-of-21) to forge a 33-23 first-quarter lead.

The Clippers shot a embarrassing 9 percent (2-of-22) in the second quarter and scored only 10 points as Utah extended its lead to 50-33 at halftime.

Los Angeles scored 32 points in the third quarter -- one less than its entire first-half output -- and shot 61 percent in the period, but the Jazz still led 75-55 with 1:28 left. Tyrone Nesby had seven points to highlight a 10-3 run, cutting the deficit to 78-65 entering the final quarter.

The Jazz went to their bench to start the fourth quarter but, to their credit, the Clippers were not ready to mail it in.

"It just didn't seem like we had the energy that we wanted coming out," Clippers interim coach Jim Todd said. "We talked about collectively picking it up in the second half, give it our best shot and leave everything on the floor."

Los Angeles used a 12-2 run to close within 80-77 with 8:50 to play, forcing Utah coach Jerry Sloan to put his leaders, Malone and Stockton, back into the game.

The Clippers got within 82-81 on Michael Olowokandi's short hook at the 7:09 mark but Malone answered the call again, scoring six points during a 10-2 burst which gave Utah a commanding 92-83 advantage with three minutes remaining.

Bryon Russell scored 16 points and Stockton had 15 and seven assists for the Jazz, who shot 48 percent (35-of-73) from the floor and nailed 30-of-39 free throws.

"One of these days, I'm going to get 2,000, just once," Russell said.

Nesby had 23 points for Los Angeles, which shot 43 percent (33-of-76) and yielded 27 points off turnovers.
