Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Coach George Karl has reached the playoffs each of the previous eight seasons and his Milwaukee Bucks finally appear poised to extend that streak.

Ray Allen scored 27 points and hit the go-ahead free throw with 4.9 seconds to play as the Bucks overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to pull out a crucial 101-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Milwaukee (39-39) has struggled with its consistency all season, but with the playoffs on the line, the Bucks have responded, winning three in a row and five of six to forge an eighth-place tie with Orlando for the final Eastern Conference spot. The Magic suffered a 95-91 loss at Boston.

Sam Cassell scored 11 of his 29 points in the third quarter, when the Bucks used a 13-0 burst to take the lead. Milwaukee squandered an eight-point bulge in the final three minutes as Wesley Person buried a 3-pointer to pull Cleveland even at 100-100 with 21 seconds remaining.

"I was scared to play this game because we know what a dangerous team Cleveland can be," Cassell said. "They didn't have anything to lose tonight and they played extremely aggressive down the stretch."

But Allen drove the lane and drew a foul from Bob Sura with just under five seconds left. An 89 percent free-throw shooter, Allen misfired on his first attempt but drained the second before Sura threw up an airball at the buzzer.

The Bucks have four games remaining and host Charlotte on Friday.

Karl led the Seattle SuperSonics to seven straight playoff berths before helping the Bucks snap an eight-year postseason drought in 1999.

"Can we call the season off?" joked Karl about the playoff race. "I think the best thing for us to do is focus on every game and try to win every game. We have a tough gave against Charlotte on Friday and that's the one we have to focus on now."

Person scored 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting for the Cavaliers, who have lost five of six.

"Our first unit, with the exception of (Person) didn't have that energy level that we have to have to play," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "The group that did it in the first half was our second group. When we started the third, we went back to standing and holding."

Glenn Robinson scored 20 points and Tim Thomas added 11 for the Bucks, who outscored the Cavs, 29-18, in the third quarter to climb back into contention after a lackluster first half.

"I didn't know Boston won 'til after the game," Robinson said. "I'm not worried about Orlando. We're just trying to take care of our business. We're not worried about anyone else right now."

Cassell hit a 15-footer and a runner around a pair of foul shots by Darvin Ham to give the Bucks a 98-89 lead with 3:43 to play. But Sura responded with a 30-footer, sparking Cleveland's late rally.

Brevin Knight hit two free throws and Shawn Kemp made a layup and 1-of-2 from the line before Person's 3-pointer knotted the game at 100-100 with 21 ticks remaining.

Sura appeared to strip Allen on his way through the lane on the Bucks' ensuing trip, but replays showed that he clearly made contact with the All-Star shooting guard.

Allen hit 11-of-20 shots for Milwaukee, which was just 3-of-15 from 3-point range and yielded 22 points off turnovers.

Sura and Danny Ferry scored 15 points apiece for the Cavs, who shot 43 percent (35-of-82).
