Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Although their hopes for this season have long been dashed, the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks look ready to begin a genuine Texas rivalry for the future.

Reserve guards Cuttino Mobley and Moochie Norris combined for 39 points as the Rockets posted a 111-102 victory over the Mavericks in a game that featured playoff intensity and a nasty exchange of elbows and punches in the fourth quarter.

Rookie Steve Francis had 16 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds for Houston, which extended its winning streak to five games and snapped the Mavericks' five-game run.

A back-and-forth struggle turned ugly with 4:02 to play when Dallas center Shawn Bradley elbowed Houston forward Walt Williams while posting up in the lane. Williams responded by punching Bradley in the face, drawing a stream of blood from the 7-6 pivotman's mouth.

"They both deserved to get thrown out and they were," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "The bottom line is, they shot 52 percent and we shot 42 percent. We got beat and that's all I've got to say."

"I hit him with an elbow and he hit me with a punch," Bradley said. "After I went to the locker room, I wanted to talk with him, but I understand the league's rule and we sorted it out by messages. I apologized for the elbow and it never should have happened. I was surprised he punched me, but it's over with and we will move on."

Williams and Bradley both were ejected and after Shandon Anderson and Damon Jones exchanged technical free throws, the Rockets held a 98-94 lead.

"Bradley deserved what he got," Mobley said. "This is basketball, not boxing. Walt's got to protect himself after he got an elbow to the face. You could hurt somebody for life with that. There's no need to do that. How can he live with himself, as religious as he is. That's not playing hard. He should play rugby to do something like that."

Michael Finley scored 35 points for Dallas, including a hook in the lane that pulled the Mavericks within 101-99 with 2:19 remaining. Anderson made a layup off a dazzling feed from Norris before the second-year 6-1 point guard made a free throw.

Francis provided the dagger with a 26-footer with 57 seconds left as the Rockets opened a 107-99 cushion.

"I think we're learning how to win the close games," Francis said. "We're starting to take teams out left and right. Earlier this year, we didn't execute down the stretch, but now we know how it feels to win late. I wish the season wasn't about to end. I don't feel like I want to stop playing."

Mobley scored 20 points and Norris added a career-best 19 for Houston, which took the season series, 3-1.

"We made some great plays down the stretch," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Moochie was fantastic. That's his type of game. I wish the season wasn't almost over. It says a lot about these guys. You can't focus on statistics. They're really soaring big time right now."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 15 points and Erick Strickland added 14 for the Mavs, who were denied their first six-game win streak since March 1995.

Williams scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting in 36 minutes before losing his cool. Anderson scored 14 points and Kelvin Cato added 11 for Houston, which shot 53 percent (42-of-79) and held a 44-37 rebounding edge.

Hubert Davis scored 10 points off the bench for Dallas, which committed just six turnovers.

The Rockets opened a comfortable 52-42 advantage at the half behind 12 points from Mobley and Williams. Finley's three-point play and 3-pointer helped Dallas pull within 77-75 entering the final quarter.
