Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Michael Jordan is 2-0 against his former team.

Rookie Richard Hamilton scored a season-high 26 points and Chris Whitney added 17 as the Washington Wizards hung on for a 109-103 victory over the Chicago Bulls despite a season-high 44 points from rookie Elton Brand.

The last time the teams met, Jordan, the new Wizards president and former Bulls superstar, joked that he would resign from his post if his new team lost to his old one. Washington won that contest, 101-88.

Hamilton has stepped up since his early-season struggles. He hit 11-of-16 shots from the field and scored seven more than his 19-point effort against Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Brand converted 14 consecutive shots, breaking the team record of 10 straight set by Clem Haskins in 1970.

"I thought he was Rookie of the Year before tonight's game," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "He had his best game of the year for us. His numbers offensively speak for themselves. He had a good game on the offensive and defensive boards."

After trailing by eight to start the fourth quarter, Chicago pulled within 93-92 midway through the period. But Washington recovered as Hamilton hit the game's final two baskets, including a 3-pointer to that silenced the crowd.

"I knew that he could score," Washington coach Darrell Walker said. "I just needed to put the ball in his hands. It was a good effort all night by him. He hit some big 3s that calmed the crowd down. He answered every call I gave him."

The Wizards came out firing and jumped to a 10-2 advantage in the first two minutes of the contest. Chris Whitney led Washington with seven points in the opening 20 minutes, including five during the burst as his squad ended it with a 24-19 advantage.

Chicago inched closer in the second quarter and shaved the deficit to three on five occassions. Each time the Bulls got close, the Wizards received big shots from Hamilton and Tracy Murray.

"I just want to be out there in those clutch times," Hamilton said. "I want to get the ball in the clutch and take advantage of the time I get there. Coach said if I get the drive, to drive and if not, give it up to one of the other open guys. He told me to just make the decision."

After Chicago got within 65-61 with 7:56 remaining in the third quarter, Washington used its backcourt of Whitney and Mitch Richmond to take its biggest lead of the contest at 82-71 with 2:48 to play in the period.

Richmond's 3-pointer which gave the Wizards the 11-point lead. He scored 12 of his 16 points on 3-pointers, making 4-of-5 from behind the arc and 1-of-9 from inside.

Brand was the only player with a double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds.

"We (himself and Hamilton) both had our career-high games tonight," Brand said. "This reminded me of the Duke-Connecticut championship game, I hit a shot and he hit a shot."

Bulls rookie Ron Artest was scratched from the lineup with a sprained right ankle.
