Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel and rookie James Posey keyed a decisive fourth-quarter run as the Denver Nuggets rallied for a 105-97 victory over the woeful Golden State Warriors.

Van Exel's 3-pointer with six minutes left broke a tie and ignited a 12-1 run that Posey capped with a layup to make it 98-87 with 3:24 to play.

The Nuggets won for the 12th time in a game in which they trailed by 10 or more points and won for just the eighth time when they trailed after three quarters (8-37).

Van Exel finished with 22 points and seven assists, Posey scored 21 points and Raef LaFrentz added 23 and 12 rebounds for the Nuggets (32-47), who had lost their last two.

"Whatever he (LaFrentz) ate, he should eat it again," Nuggets forward George McCloud said. "He was aggressive and went down and got good position in the post, and had confidence with his outside shot."

Mookie Blaylock led Golden State with 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. The Warriors (19-61) managed to avoid finishing in the Western Conference basement but own the NBA's third-worst record overall.

Compared to its 8-31 record on the road, Denver is an impressive 24-16 at the Pepsi Center, assuring them of their best home record since at least 1995-96, when they went 24-17.

The Warriors got 16 points from Larry Hughes, but he hit just 7-of-28 from the floor. Hughes contributed nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.

McCloud said it was no accident that Hughes shot poorly.

"Every shot was a contested shot," he said.

"I just wanted to get to him and contest his shots," said Van Exel, who was saddled with the task of controlling the high-scoring Hughes. "I wasn't going to block it, but I wanted him to shoot it over me and not get easy shots."

Van Exel had shooting woes of his own, hitting just 5-of-19, but he hit them when the Nuggets needed them.

Van Exel nailed a 3-pointer from the right side with 5:59 left that put the Nuggets up to stay, 89-86, and less than a minute later he hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to five points.

Van Exel then fed Posey for a 3-pointer from the left corner that stretched the lead to 94-86 with 4:52 left. After Jason Caffey hit 1-of-2 free throws for the Warriors, McCloud hit a pair of free throws and Posey put in a layup, giving Denver a 98-87 advantage with 3:24 to play.

"Nick played well, Posey played well, Raef and George played well," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "It was a pretty good performance, especially in the second half."
