Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- For a game that had no playoff implications, the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers put on quite a show for 17,738 fans at the Staples Center.

Nick Van Exel scored a career-high 44 points on 16-of-32 shooting as the Nuggets survived a wild finish for a 115-114 overtime triumph.

Tyrone Nesby nailed a long 3-pointer to bring Los Angeles within 113-111 with 19 seconds left in overtime and Van Exel hit a free throw two seconds later for a three-point lead. Derek Anderson closed the Clippers' deficit to 114-113 on two foul shots with 10 seconds to play.

Van Exel drilled one-of-two free throws with 8.3 seconds left in overtime as Denver gained a 115-113 lead. With no time outs, Los Angeles raced up the court and rookie Lamar Odom was fouled by Antonio McDyess on a drive with 0.5 seconds to play.

Odom made the first foul shot but missed the second and newly acquired Etdrick Bohannon could not tip it in at the buzzer as the Clippers season-high skid reached 16 games.

Van Exel's performance beat his 41-point effort against the Los Angeles Lakers on April 5 of last season. He shot 5-of-11 from 3-point range to help Denver notch its third win in five games.

"I didn't know I'd scored a career high, but I'm just glad we won the game," said Van Exel, who only averaged 13 points in three previous games this season against the Clippers. "I just felt good and they kept calling my number. I just think both teams wanted to win badly."

"He wasn't going to let us lose," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "He's played well all year, not just tonight. But we had other guys that scored a lot that helped us win."

Even with one home game remaining, the Clippers set a franchise record for attendance in one season with 540,750. The previous mark of 532,632 was set in 1992-93.

McDyess scored 30 points on 12-of-21 shooting and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds for Denver, which improved to 9-31 on the road this season. George McCloud added 12 points and a career-best 11 rebounds.

Anderson scored 31 points to lead six players in double figures and Tyrone Nesby added 25 for the Clippers, who dropped three of four meetings with the Nuggets this season. Odom finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds and Eric Piatkowski also had 13 points.

"This is the best loss," Anderson said. "We finished the game. We had a chance to win. I liked this game. The guys started to get competitive against each other and really went after each other."

"No one wanted to leave the court embarrassed," Odom said. "So we said -- to heck with it -- and we really played hard. The only thing we can try to do is get better for next season."

Anderson hit a driving layup with 88 seconds left in regulation and added a free throw one minute later as the Clippers opened a 98-95 lead. But, as was the case all night, Van Exel would not be denied as he drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner with 19 seconds left for the tie.

Odom missed a jumper from the top of the key and teammate Keith Closs could not grab the rebound at the buzzer.
