Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets are surging toward the NBA playoffs.

Eddie Jones scored 23 of his 25 points in the first three quarters as the Hornets continued to roll with a 105-102 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Charlotte won its fifth straight game and for the 12th time in its last 14 contests overall. The Hornets trail fourth-place Philadelphia by one game for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, which begin next weekend.

Jones' big first three quarters helped the Hornets open an 83-73 advantage. Boston had three chances to send the game into overtime in the final 10 seconds but Kenny Anderson, Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker missed 3-pointers.

"We had our little lapses. We had a chance to win the ballgame," Pierce said. "We had a key possession at the end. We didn't make it, and that was the difference."

Walker had 21 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for the Celtics, who had a three-game winning streak stopped.

The Hornets looked to be in good shape, holding a 99-89 advantage with 3:55 remaining on a layup by Eddie Robinson, who scored half of his 16 points over the final 12 minutes.

Robinson led a spirited effort by the Charlotte bench, which outscored the Celtics reserves, 53-22. Chucky Brown added 12 points and Brad Miller and Baron Davis had 10 apiece off the Hornets bench.

"Some of these guys got to play. They are important for the playoffs and are valuable to our team," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We can't keep playing our starters, big, big minutes. If you do, they won't be fresh for the playoffs. But our bench played well and they were a huge part of this win."

It was still an eight-point game with just over two minutes to play. But the Celtics used a 7-2 spurt, capped by a driving layup by Walker, that pulled Boston within 105-102 with 42 seconds to go.

After Anderson and Pierce misfired from 3-point range, Walker had the last chance but his shot from 27 feet bounced off the side of the rim as time expired.

"They caught us off guard a little bit," Jones said. "They are young and energetic. When you're young and energetic there's always a chance you could come back."

Boston got off to a quick start and scored the game's first 10 points. However, the Hornets used a 7-0 run at the end of the period to take a 24-22 advantage.

A dunk by Robinson early in the second quarter put the Hornets in front for good. They extended the lead to 48-35 with 3:10 left before halftime on a free throw by Davis and held a 55-46 advantage at the break. Jones netted 12 points in the half.

Jones made 9-of-14 field goals for the Hornets, who shot 51 percent (41-of-81).

Eric Williams added 20 points and Pierce had 18 for Boston, which shot 45 percent (37-of-83) and made 5-of-18 attempts from 3-point range.
