Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Despite the loss of star point guard Tim Hardaway, the Miami Heat are Atlantic Division champions for the fourth straight year.

After Hardaway went down with a foot injury in the first quarter, his replacement, rookie Anthony Carter, keyed a decisive third-quarter run as the Heat rallied from an eight-point deficit and posted a 95-84 win over the Orlando Magic.

The win clinched the division title and at least the second seed in the Eastern Conference for the Heat (51-29), who lead New York by two games with two to play. Miami holds the tiebreaker after winning the season series from the Knicks, 3-1.

"There's a bigger picture than that for us," Heat center Alonzo Mourning said of the latest division title. "We've won the division the past four years. We set our goals higher than that. I know what we're capable of doing as a team and we can enjoy this win tonight, but there's a bigger picture."

The division title was the 16th for Heat coach Pat Riley, who recorded his 998th career win.

"The title doesn't mean much in terms of where we want to go," he said. "But when I think about how many wins I have it reminds me of how old my children have gotten and how old I have gotten."

Carter scored five of his 15 points in the key 17-5 run for the Heat. Mourning led Miami with 18 points and Jamal Mashburn added 16.

"I thought once Anthony Carter was able to read the zones they were playing, he was able to do a real good job in the second half," Riley said.

The loss dropped Orlando (40-40) into a tie with Milwaukee (40-40) for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot heading into Monday's showdown in Orlando. The Magic have lost all three games against Milwaukee this season.

"We have to win tomorrow and there's no doubt about that," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "It's going to be a tough one tomorrow because we haven't played well against (Milwaukee)."

Orlando shot just 41 percent from the field and the starting backcourt of Darrell Armstrong and Ron Mercer combined to go 10-of-29 from the field. Armstrong finished with 16 points and rookie Corey Maggette added 15 for the Magic.

"It was a total collapse, but you have to give credit to the Heat," Armstrong said. "They found a way to win and when you're in your own building, you got to find a way to win."

The start of the game was delayed for two hours and six minutes due to a power outage.

"I thought I went to a Heat game and a Florida Marlins' game broke out," Rivers said. "It was a long, long wait, but it didn't really affect us."

When the game began at 2:36 p.m. EDT, Hardaway returned to the lineup after missing the previous two contests with a sprained left foot. He aggravated the injury in the first quarter, had the foot re-taped and attempted to play again. However, he limped badly and was carried off the court.

X-rays were negative and Hardaway will be re-evaluated on Monday. With the division title clinched, he likely will miss the last two games of the regular season.

"Timmy is a big part of this," Mashburn said. "We're not going to get any sympathy. We still have to play basketball."

Carter has been pressed into duty all season due to Hardaway's assortment of knee and ankle injuries. Today, that paid off when Hardaway went down again.

After a driving layup by Mercer opened a 60-52 lead for the Magic with 6:16 left in the third quarter, Carter converted a three-point play to ignite the decisive run. Dan Majerle followed with a free throw on an illegal defense technical and connected on a 3-pointer to pull Miami within 60-59 with 4:43 remaining.

A dunk by Clarence Weatherspoon off a pass from Mashburn gave Miami its first lead of the half, 61-60 with 4:08 left.

Carter added a 21-foot jumper and Mourning and Weatherspoon capped the run with short hook shots, giving Miami a 69-65 lead with 1:17 to go in the third quarter.

Bruce Bowen nailed a 3-pointer and a layup to highlight a clinching 13-2 fourth-quarter run. Weatherspoon scored on a dunk and made 1-of-2 free throws to give Miami a 79-72 lead with 7:02 left.

After Maggette converted a driving layup to pull Orlando within 79-74, the Magic scored the next 10 points on a 3-pointer by Majerle, a layup and a 3-pointer by Bowen and a layup by Carter. Miami had an 89-74 lead with 3:40 remaining.
