Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored 25 points and Erick Strickland added 19 and 11 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Vancouver Grizzlies, 114-106, to clinch a winning home record this season.

After Vancouver closed to 108-104 in the final minute, Finley hit a basket with 39 seconds left to help put away the Grizzlies. Othella Harrington's layup made it 110-106 before the Mavericks scored their final four points at the foul line.

Dallas (38-42) improved to 21-19 at home and can reach 40 wins for the first time since the 1989-90 season by winning its final two. The Mavericks, who surpassed the 30-victory mark just once in the previous eight seasons, have won seven of their last eight.

"I wanted to win so bad," Strickland said. "It does secure a home winning record for us for the second straight year. I wanted to win this one badly."

The Grizzlies took an 89-86 lead on Harrington's basket with 8:26 to play, but Stickland drilled a 3-pointer to ignite a 17-7 run for the Mavericks. He capped the spurt with a jumper, making it 103-96 with three minutes to play.

"Erick Strickland won this game for us tonight," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I put him on the floor for way too long. He looks as old as I am, but I really needed him. He was just making so many plays for us tonight."

Harrington matched a career high with 27 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 19 and 13 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost five straight at Dallas.

All five Dallas starters scored in double figures as Dirk Nowitzki contributed 16 points, Steve Nash 13 and Shawn Bradley 10. Nash also handed out nine assists.

"To finish the season so well after starting so poorly, we just were not ready," Nash said. "Next year we'll prepare to get ready to make sure we do make the playoffs."

Greg Buckner scored 12 points and Hubert Davis added 11 off the bench, giving the Mavericks seven players in double figures for the second straight game.

Dallas shot 48 percent (44-of-91) from the field and committed only six turnovers.

"A running team normally turns the ball over and we just don't do it," Nelson said. "We make good decisions, we pass early. ... Maybe I've got the fear of God in them and they're afraid to make a risky pass."

The Grizzlies suffered their 12th straight road loss, dropping to 9-30 away from Vancouver.

"Every NBA game is coming down to the wire," Vancouver coach Lionel Hollins said. "You have to make correct plays and make the right decisions all the time. We didn't do that all the time tonight, but we were in the game. Our guys played hard and competed and stuck with it."

Dallas opened its biggest lead at 42-30 on Buckner's foul shot with 5:42 remaining in the second quarter before settling for a 52-48 halftime lead.
