Game StorySAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Once again without Tim Duncan, the San Antonio Spurs rallied from a 12-point deficit to defeat the Vancouver Grizzlies, 100-93, keeping alive their hopes of gaining home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
The result enabled the defending NBA champions to clinch the fifth seed in the Western Conference and set up an opening-round matchup against the Phoenix Suns.
The Spurs (52-29) pulled within one-half game of the Suns (52-28), who have two games remaining. Phoenix hosts Houston on Tuesday and visits Golden State in the regular-season finale on Wednesday. San Antonio closes the campaign on Wednesday against the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers.
The 7-foot Duncan, the Most Valuable Player of last year's NBA Finals, sat out his third straight game with torn cartilage in his left knee.
David Robinson scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Spurs overcome a 78-66 deficit late in the third quarter.
San Antonio came out flat after Saturday's 106-83 rout of Utah.
"We picked it up in the third quarter," Robinson said. "We had spacing in our offense. When we let guys do what they do best, we have a great offense. We spaced the ball out and took good shots."
"This was better than Utah because we were so close at the end," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich added. "They are quick and unpredictable in their style, unlike the execution of Utah. I'm thrilled with this win."
San Antonio took the lead for good at 92-91 on Robinson's jumper with 3:15 left. The final score represented the Spurs' biggest advantage.
"We knew this game would not be easy," Robinson said. "They took Phoenix to the wire the other night. We knew this was going to be a tough game."
Michael Dickerson scored 29 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost the last 11 meetings with the Spurs, including nine in a row in San Antonio.
Leading 53-50 at halftime, Vancouver stretched its advantage to 78-66 on two free throws by Shareef Abdur-Rahim with 2:10 left in the third quarter. Robinson dunked and Avery Johnson, who scored a season-high 24 points, added two baskets, bringing the Spurs within 78-72 entering the final quarter.
The Grizzlies got the lead back up to 83-74 on Dickerson's dunk with 9:31 to play, but Robinson capped a 12-2 spurt with a three-point play that put San Antonio in front, 86-85, with 6:29 to go.
"Not having Tim Duncan makes this team a little vulnerable and forces other guys to step up," said Abdur-Rahim, who scored 27 points. "They are a good team with a lot of veterans who can do that. The difference was they were able to make stops at the end of the game."
Abdur-Rahim's jumper enabled the Grizzlies to close to 96-93 with 1:18 left, but Johnson capped the win with a short jumper and two foul shots in the final minute.
"We have a small margin for error with Tim out," Robinson said. "We have to take advantage of our strengths. A.J. came out to play. Everyone stepped up."
