Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers can forget about matching their predecessors for the second-best record in NBA history.

The Lakers came up empty in the fourth quarter for one of the few times this season and suffered a 112-102 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, who are finishing the season on a strong note.

"What a game! We're playing so well and I looked so forward to this game more than any game this year," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "I thought we were going to play well. I thought it would be a great game, but it was better than that. It was a great game and we won. Our game plan was sensational and these guys carried it out again with no preparation, no practice."

Nelson said afterward that this would be his last game as coach. Earlier this season, he met with new owner Mark Cuban and the two decided that Nelson would remain as general manager but his son, Donn, would not succeed him as planned. Donn Nelson is expected to coach the team at Minnesota on Wednesday.

"This is it," the elder Nelson said. "It just couldn't be a better game. Playing the best team in basketball for my last game and beating them."

Shaquille O'Neal, the league's likely Most Valuable Player, had 38 points and 20 rebounds for the Lakers, which needed to win its final two games to match the 1971-72 Lakers (69-13) for the second-best mark in league history. The Chicago Bulls went 72-10 in 1995-96.

"We know every team is going to be after us and we just have to be ready for it," O'Neal said. "We just have to cut down on our mistakes. If we can do that then nobody should be able to beat us.

The Mavs used a 21-13 run in the fourth quarter to take a 101-88 lead on a jumper by Cedric Ceballos with 3:47 to play.

Los Angeles dropped to 30-3 since the All-Star break and 52-10 in its last 62 games. If the Lakers win their regular-season finale on Wednesday against San Antonio, they will set a NBA mark for best post-All Star break record. The Utah Jazz went 31-4 three years ago.

Michael Finley scored 25 points and Steve Nash added 23 for the Mavericks, who snapped a 19-game slide against the Lakers, the NBA's longest current streak against one team.

Dallas has won eight of nine and can finish with 40 wins for the first time since the 1988-89 season with a victory at Minnesota on Wednesday.

"I knew that we could play," Mavs guard Erick Strickland said. "If we had gotten just an average start we would have been in good shape. We're just happy to play well for the second half of the season."

"That's for sure, but we didn't do a very good job in the beginning," Nowitzki said. "We didn't protect the home court well enough and lost some easy games on the road. I would rather have made the playoffs."

After Glen Rice hit a free throw to give the Lakers a 75-74 lead with 3:06 left in the third quarter, Dallas scored the final five points of the period to take an 80-75 edge on Finley's eight-footer with 36 seconds left.

Finley scored eight points and Ceballos added seven of his 21 in the decisive fourth-quarter run. The Lakers got no closer than six in the final minute.

"It was a lot of fun," Nash said. "It was great for the fans. It was good for us to go out at home with a winning record (22-19) and to beat the best team in the league. It was a great accomplishment."

"They played well and they hit a lot of shots and they won the ballgame," O'Neal said. "They played loose. They shot the ball well. We had a couple of shots to win it but could never click."

Kobe Bryant added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers but was just 7-of-20 from the field. Los Angeles committed 24 turnovers.
