Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Shandon Anderson tied his career high with 35 points, including seven during a decisive fourth-quarter run, and Steve Francis added 27 as the Houston Rockets defeated the Phoenix Suns, 107-98.

Cuttino Mobley came off the bench to score 20 of his 24 points in the first half as lottery-bound Houston (34-47) won for the sixth time in seven games. Phoenix (52-29) fell into a tie with idle San Antonio for the fourth spot in the Western Conference with one game remaining.

The score was tied 81-81 with just over nine minutes remaining when Anderson ignited a 14-2 run with two free throws. Anderson scored five more points in the burst, including a 3-pointer with 5:42 left to make it 93-83.

Phoenix cut the deficit to 98-92 with 95 seconds remaining but Anderson sealed the victory with his sixth 3-pointer on the next possession. He matched his career best previously set during a 112-96 loss at Orlando on March 24.

"We felt like if we penetrated, we could kick the ball out and get some easy shots and we did just that," Anderson said. "We're playing for next year. Our core guys are healthy and will be back, and we're playing for that."

The Suns tied it earlier by going on a 13-3 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters, backed by Cliff Robinson's seven points.

"There was energy," Robinson said. "We just didn't pull the game out. Those guys were able to play a loose basketball game and they were able to make big shots."

Robinson and Penny Hardaway scored 20 points apiece and Randy Livingston added 19 as the Suns shot 45 percent from the field (39-of-87) while holding a 52-28 advantage in points in the paint.

"When we came out of the double teams and tried to challenge their shots, they faked it," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Overall it was not a good game for us. It was a very disappointing loss. I'm just thinking about beating Golden State."

Skiles, who replaced the fired Danny Ainge and is 39-21 since taking over the position, was rewarded with a five-year contract extension before the game believed to be worth $12.5 million.

Houston shot 49 percent from the floor (34-of-70) while outscoring Phoenix, 20-7, in fast-break points.

The teams exchanged leads throughout the first quarter until Houston went on a 15-2 run late in the session to take a 24-12 lead. Mobley scored 10 of the points on two 3-pointers sandwiched in-between four free throws.

"We wanted to run them because we're quicker than they are," Mobley said. "They don't have (Tom Gugliotta) and (Jason Kidd) and we knew we could run them."

Anderson started his hot shooting with a pair of treys that opened the second quarter while Mobley added 10 more in the stanza as Houston opened a 51-38 advantage at halftime.

"We took our shots when they were there," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We moved the ball around when we were covered. Cuttino gave us a big lift off the bench. It was amazing."

Before the game, Charles Barkley announced that he will play at least 10 minutes for Houston during Wednesday's finale against Vancouver, despite being only 70 percent healed from a ruptured quadriceps tendon suffered at Philadelphia on November 8.
