Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn paid immediate dividends for the Charlotte Hornets.

Acquired during the offseason in a blockbuster seven-player trade with the Miami Heat, Mashburn scored 23 points as the Charlotte Hornets spoiled Lon Kruger's NBA coaching debut with a 106-82 rout of the shorthanded Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta played without defensive specialist Dikembe Mutombo, who remains sidelined with what the team has termed a slight case of malaria. He contracted the disease during a visit to the Congo -- his homeland -- last month.

Mashburn exploited the 7-2 Mutumbo's absence and set an early tone with 12 points in the first quarter as the Hornets charged to a 26-8 lead.

"I think we're a lot more fluid offensively this year," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We've gotten Mash, who can do just about everything. B.D. (Baron Davis) is maturing as a player and P.J. Brown is just so relentless."

With 6-11 forward Lorenzen Wright also starting the season on the injured list, the Hawks were worn down in the second half, managing just eight rebounds after holding a 21-20 edge at halftime.

"I was very angry at halftime with the rebounding," Silas said. "They were up by one. We had only two offensive rebounds to their nine. I made a point that I was upset."

Trailing 28-13 after 12 minutes, Atlanta rallied to take a 61-60 lead on Larry Robinson's jumper with 4:39 left in the third period. But the Hawks expended too much energy coming back.

They went scoreless for the next four minutes and Charlotte closed the period with a 13-1 spurt. The Hornets opened a 73-62 lead when Brown, another player acquired from the Heat, banked in a jumper from the top of the key with 30 seconds left in the quarter.

However, Mashburn was concerned about the Hornets' lapse in the second period. Atlanta outscored Charlotte, 34-22, in the quarter to pull with 50-47 at the half.

"We just have to be focused," Mashburn said. "We just can't have a lapse if we expect to be one of the better teams in the East. We just have to play all four quarters. When you play an elite team, you can't have that. You'll get blown out of the gym."

But the Hawks could not keep up in the second half. Charlotte pulled away in the fourth quarter and the final score represented its biggest lead. Davis added 20 points and David Wesley 18 for the Hornets.

"We settled down," Davis said. "We rebounded well, we stopped them from second shots and that ended up getting our offense going. We started to box them out and get better positioning."

Brown scored 14 points and led Charlotte's domination on the boards with 16 rebounds. The Hornets finished with a 44-28 edge on the glass.

"I thought we made it harder than we should have," Brown said. "Coach Silas got on us at the half because we weren't rebounding very well. Guys started going to the hole more and it opened everything up from the outside."

Alan Henderson scored 23 points and Robinson 21 for the Hawks, who scored only 35 in the second half.

"We wanted to make sure we were in there," Henderson said. "We made a little run. We got in there and battled but we were a little short. We were right there in the game when we were both in the 60s. We had a chance to win."

After the Hawks scored the game's first two baskets, Charlotte took control with a 26-4 burst, shooting 53 percent from the field in the first quarter.

Henderson brought the Hawks back with 10 points in the second quarter. Robinson also kept Atlanta close with three 3-pointers in the half.

"The second quarter, I think we did a lot of good things," Kruger said. "We got right back in the ballgame. I thought our guys battled. I think fatigue settled in a little bit."

After Robinson gave Atlanta its 61-60 lead, Wesley hit two straight layups and Charlotte never looked back. Atlanta did not score again until Henderson hit 1-of-2 from the line with 40 seconds left.

"Charlotte's awfully good," Kruger said. "They started hurting us inside on the boards. They were making the plays and we didn't. We have a long way to go and I know our guys will work at it."

Jim Jackson and rookie Hanno Mottola, the first native of Finland to play in the NBA, added 10 points apiece for Atlanta.
