Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Michael Dickerson scored 20 points and Othella Harrington added 18 and 13 rebounds as the Vancouver Grizzlies held off the Los Angeles Clippers, 99-91.

Vancouver is off to its first 2-0 start since its inaugural campaign of 1995-96. That season, the Grizzlies followed their two wins with a 19-game losing streak.

The Grizzlies used a 13-5 run to open a 46-33 advantage with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter. Vancouver then began the second half with an 11-3 spurt to push the lead to 65-44.

Dickerson hit a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the third quarter to ignite the run and added a 13-footer seconds later before capping the stretch by setting up Bryant Reeves' long jumper.

But Vancouver's offense struggled down the stretch as it went without a basket for the final 7:15 of the game. The Grizzlies last 12 points came on free throws.

"I don't know if we relaxed when we were ahead," Dickerson said. "They are a different team this year. They're a good young team and they just made a determined run."

Los Angeles took advantage and cut the deficit to 92-87 on a free throw by Jeff McInnis with 53 seconds remaining but the Clippers did not get any closer.

"We just started out flat," McInnis said. "We had our runs and we had a chance to get right back in the game. Their rebounding killed us early on and then we made our run."

In Tuesday's season opener, Vancouver nearly blew a 25-point lead before escaping with 94-88 victory over Seattle.

"We have to understand that when we have a lead, we can't let teams come back into the game," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "(The Clippers) forced us to do some things we didn't want to do but we held them off and got the win."

Dickerson, who scored 25 points on Tuesday, was 8-of-17 from the field, including four 3-pointers. The Grizzlies shot 41 percent on the night (36-of-87).

"We're looking to improve and win games," Dickerson said. "We try to improve every practice and every game. We're taking some steps to improve."

Four of Los Angeles' five starters scored at least 14 points, paced by Lamar Odom's 17. The Clippers connected on 48 percent of their shots (38-of-79) and held a 44-40 rebounding advantage.

"I thought we played with great effort," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "It's just that when you get down that big, you almost have to be perfect, even at home."

The Grizzlies have won four of the last five meetings between the teams and have prevailed in nine of the last 11 dating to March, 1998.

"We did a lot of great things out there tonight, but we have a long way to go," Vancouver's Shareef Abdur-Rahim said. "We have to improve because when (the Clippers) put pressure on us, we went back on our heels."

Los Angeles is off to its fourth straight 0-2 start.
