Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Of the four starters involved the blockbuster offseason deal between the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat, it was Jamal Mashburn who made the difference.

Mashburn had 30 points and nine rebounds and Baron Davis added a career-high 21 points as the Hornets pulled out an 83-79 victory over the Heat in sloppily played contest.

Mashburn, who came to the Hornets with P.J. Brown in exchange for Eddie Jones and Anthony Mason as the primary figures in a nine-player deal, did most of his damage in the first half, collecting 23 points to help Charlotte to a 42-36 lead.

The 6-8 forward had eight baskets in the half while the rest of the Hornets made just 6-of-25 from the field.

"Jamal gave us a big spark. Without his points we wouldn't have won," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "When we needed a big hoop, he provided it."

Brown managed only two points and five rebounds before fouling out for Charlotte, which made 16-of-33 in the second half after shooting only 38 percent through the first 24 minutes.

Charlotte's shooting woes paled in comparison to Miami's, which was a woeful 35 percent (26-of-74) and had as many turnovers as baskets late in the third quarter. The Heat shot 27 percent in the first half.

Despite their dismal effort, the Heat had an opportunity to pull even with 1:22 left but Tim Hardaway missed a 3-pointer and Miami got no closer.

Before the trade was consummated, Miami's Tim Hardaway was among a number of Heat players who openly campaigned to acquire Jones. That may have inspired Mashburn's impressive performance tonight.

"I know he had in his mind he was gonna take it to 'em, so we just let him play his game," said Hornets center Elden Campbell, who collected 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Miami wasted a terrific effort by Brian Grant, who collected 33 points, one shy of his career high, and 16 rebounds. Jones had 11 points and Mason three, missing all seven of his shots.

"Mash got off to a hot start and burned us from long range," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We just couldn't get over the hump at the end. We made poor decisions down the stretch. Grant had a great game. We need that type of production from everyone. We need consistency from everyone."

Mashburn had 14 points and Davis added five as the duo accounted for all of their teams' first-quarter points, giving Charlotte a 19-16 lead. Miami committed seven turnovers in the period and made just 5-of-23 shots.

The duo continued to carry Charlotte in the second quarter, combining for 16 points as the Hornets took a 42-36 edge at halftime. Grant was Miami's lone threat throughout the session, scoring 12 points compared to eight by his teammates.

"Baron is really coming along, he can get to the hoop on anyone," Silas said. "His shot has improved and this is just the tip of the iceberg for him. Both Mash and BD can create their own shots. It's great to have players that can do that."

Davis provided a 58-48 cushion on a running jumper with 3:54 left in the third but quarter the Heat were able to draw within five at the end of the quarter on Tim Hardaway's 3-pointer.

The Heat drew within two early in the fourth and again at 76-74 on Grant's jumper with 3:24 left but Davis responded with two from the line and Mashburn canned a short jumper to push the lead the six less than a minute later.

Grant followed with a leaner and made 1-of-2 free throws to cut the deficit to 80-77 with 1:51 remaining but the Hornets made three free throws in the final minute.

"We made some mental mistakes down the stretch and were not able to get to loose ball," Grant said. "We have to finish better in these tight games. Jamal got off to a quick start and made us re-adjust our defensive game plan. We had the effort tonight but we just made too many mistakes."
