Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Vince Carter said there was no need to be overly worried after the Toronto Raptors' 0-3 start. Tonight, the high-flying superstar showed everyone why with a virtuoso performance and some late help from Alvin Williams.

Carter had 34 points, eight rebounds, hit all 12 free throws and blocked two shots while Williams scored 18 of his career-high 22 points in the final period as Toronto held off the Washington Wizards, 103-96, for its first win.

Carter missed a potential tying 3-pointer late in Friday's 93-91 loss at Boston. But the 6-7 superstar said afterward that he was not frustrated by the franchise's worst start.

Tonight he responded by knocking down 10-of-22 shots in 44 minutes. But Carter and the Raptors have been looking for a second scoring option after the departure of Tracy McGrady to Orlando and tonight they got it from Williams.

"Everybody contributed tonight and everybody stepped up," Carter said. "They weren't afraid to shoot the ball or grab a rebound. The way Alvin played made it easier for me. The double-team wasn't there as much and it made it just 1-on-1 for the most part."

The 6-5, 185-pound guard caught fire over the final 12 minutes, hitting 6-of-8 shots, both of his 3-pointers and 4-of-7 free throws as the Raptors handed Washington its third loss in four games and second in as many nights.

"The first win always helps and we really wanted to get it," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "You can't say enough about Alvin. He stepped up big tonight. Someone will emerge and step up. If we have to rely on three or four people, then so be it. They wanted to get the monkey off their back."

"Anytime you get a chance to play and help the team get a win it feels good," Williams said. "Points were coming and we were winning and that is what is important."

Mitch Richmond scored 22 points and Juwan Howard added 21 for Washington.

Carter came out smoking, quickly hitting a pair of jumpers and colelcting 19 points in the first half. But it was a 19-3 run bridging the first and second quarters with Carter on the bench that gave Toronto a 36-25 lead.

Rookie Morris Peterson capped the burst with a 17-footer. He and Kevin Willis finished with 11 points apiece off the bench.

Antonio Davis scored 14 points for the Raptors, who shot 45 percent (35-of-77) and held a 46-37 rebounding edge.

Rod Strickland had 16 points and 12 assists and Gerard King added 14 points off the bench for Washington, which shot 45 percent (39-of-87) and forced 17 turnovers.

Strickland hit a jumper to help the Wizards get within 85-81 with 7:55 to play but Williams responded with a short jumper, a 3-pointer and a 19-footer to make it 92-83 with 4:06 left.

"Alvin Williams was the difference," Howard said. "He made tough shots in the fourth. He really turned things around."

Carter was upended by Richmond while taking a 17-footer and the ball swished through the net as Carter fell to the ground. He sank the ensuing free throw to make it 95-87 with 1:56 remaining.

"We ran into a team tonight that when the game was on the line, they executed shots," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "Tonight, on some of those shots, Alvin had great position. And those shots Vince Carter made. He was off-balance and they still went in. I can't fault my guys."
