Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Missed opportunities by Paul Pierce resulted in another empty trip to Cleveland for the Boston Celtics.

Pierce missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 23 seconds left and committed a turnover in the final seconds as the unbeaten Cavaliers posted their 10th consecutive home victory over the Celtics, 91-89.

The Cavaliers, off to their first 3-0 start since the 1988-1989 season, have not lost to the Celtics at Gund Arena since April 4, 1995. Tonight, they received a big effort from their bench as Chris Gatling led the team with 16 points and the reserves combined for 44.

"My role is to change the flow of the game and score if I could score," Gatling said. "Mainly, we have been working so much on defense and that's what I tried to do tonight. If I had my shot, I'd take it."

The Celtics led 89-88 following two free throws by Kenny Anderson with 93 seconds left. Boston had a chance to extend its advantage when Pierce missed a layup. Andre Miller hit a driving layup six seconds later to give Cleveland the lead.

On Boston's ensuing possession, they ran a play for Pierce, who missed a 3-pointer from the right wing.

"That was a very difficult loss because we could have easily put it away," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "I thought Paul Pierce's shot did a 360 twice. I thought it was dead in. We had a great shot to win it but we didn't play our best basketball."

"I thought it was in," Pierce said. "I had a good look at it. It rolled around the rim, looked like it was going to fall in, then it came out at the last second. That was an example of how my night was going."

Miller added a free throw with nine seconds remaining for a 91-89 lead and Pierce lost control of the ball as time expired and Boston never got off a shot.

"We wanted to get a pick-and-roll to see if Kenny could penetrate," Pitino explained. "If not, take it to Paul and let Paul penetrate. And if he didn't have the shot, look opposite. Unfortunately, we just lost the ball."

"It was just one of those nights," said Pierce, who shot 2-of-11 from the field and committed six turnovers. "Things weren't going my way. I saw a lot of double-teams and I was turning the ball over. It's something I just can't do. I'm glad to get that one out of my system."

Antoine Walker led Boston with 25 points and nine rebounds but the Celtics, who had won their first two games, shot just 37 percent (27-for-74) and committed 21 turnovers. Boston erased a 21-point deficit in a win over Toronto on Friday.

The Cavaliers raced to a 9-2 start but Boston scored 18 of the next 22 points to seize a seven-point lead. Pierce had six of his 10 points in that period but made just 1-of-10 shots over the final 36 minutes.

Cleveland was clinging to a 28-27 lead 2:10 into the second quarter when Wesley Person sank a 15-footer to spark a 16-6 run. Gatling and Person had six apiece in the spurt as the Cavaliers took a 44-33 lead with 3:07 to go in the first half.

The lead was 52-40 at the half and Cleveland pushed it to 19 midway through the third quarter. Boston still trailed by 17 with 2:22 to go in the third quarter before Bryant Stith took control.

Stith had eight straight points bridging the third and fourth quarters and got Boston within 77-71 in the opening minute of the final quarter.

The Cavaliers committed 25 turnovers and made just 1-of-9 3-pointers.
