Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- All the Milwaukee Bucks needed was a little home cooking.

After two losses on the road, the Bucks opened their home slate in style, coasting to a 97-88 victory over the Detroit Pistons for their first win of the season.

Sam Cassell scored 20 points for Milwaukee, which held an 80-59 lead after three quarters and led 96-77 with three minutes left. Detroit made it close with a late 11-0 spurt, closing to 96-88 on Mikki Moore's jumper with 52 seconds to play.

Former Piston Lindsey Hunter added 19 points for the Bucks, who were coming off a disappointing 115-93 setback at Houston. Milwaukee had 26 assists, led by Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen, who had six apiece.

"I think we're a better team when we pass the ball," Bucks coach George Karl said. "Tonight, we might have overdone it a little bit. But I don't think we're going to lose many games when Glenn and Ray have 12 assists between them."

"We did what we needed to do tonight," Hunter said. "George was stressing all week that we have to play our game. We have to dictate the way it's played. We did that tonight."

Milwaukee finally played like the team many consider to be a contender for the Central Division title, taking control with an 18-4 spurt over the final six minutes of the third quarter.

"We were on the road for two games and fell into a little slump," Milwaukee forward Tim Thomas added. "But now I think we're back on the right track."

"Sometimes, it takes time," Karl added. "I'm not going to lie. I was disappointed in the Texas trip. But November is a month of experimenting, of figuring things out."

Rookie Mateen Cleaves scored 19 points for Detroit while Jerry Stackhouse was held to a season-low 17.

The backcourt tandem of Stackhouse and Chucky Atkins, who combined for 65 points in the Pistons' season-opening 104-95 win at Toronto, were a combined 10-of-30 from the field. Stackhouse was 5-of-17 while Atkins was 5-of-13, scoring 11 points.

"We have to play better," Stackhouse said. "We are not doing enough things on offense to win ballgames. We need to rebound better and not turn the ball over. The NBA is an 80-game season and we just need to continue to improve on both sides of the ball."

Detroit (1-3) shot just 39 percent (32-of-81) from the field and has dropped three straight.

"I don't think our effort was that bad," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "On the offensive end, we are not that good right now. We have to recognize double-teams and pass out of them. We need to make simple plays and find open people."

The Pistons opened an 11-4 lead on Atkins' follow shot with 8:19 left in the first quarter but Milwaukee took the lead for good, 20-19, on Robinson's 14-footer with 1:09 left in the period.

"The Bucks are a hard team to defend," Irvine said. "They are a very explosive and talented team. We did a pretty good job defending them tonight. We just need to execute better on the offensive end if we expect to win ballgames."

After taking a 51-41 halftime lead, the Bucks scored the first six points of the third quarter, opening a 57-41 advantage on Cassell's two foul shots with 10:13 to play.

Jerome Williams' free throw pulled Detroit within 62-55 but Milwaukee used a 9-1 spurt and opened a 71-56 lead on Thomas' 18-footer with 3:43 left in the period and never looked back.

"We concentrated more on rebounding and moving the ball," Thomas said. "Tonight, we played as a unit. If we play like that, not many teams can play with us."
