Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- David Wesley scored 30 points and was part of a 3-point flurry in the fourth quarter as the Charlotte Hornets pulled away for a 98-87 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Wesley, who spent his rookie 1993-94 season with the Nets, made 11-of-18 shots and handed out seven assists. He scored nine points in the final period as he capped a pair of surges.

"It was good to get this kind of night because I struggled in the last two games," Wesley said. "Coming out and shooting the ball this well tonight was a real pick-me-up."

Baron Davis scored 20 points and Jamal Mashburn added 12 for Charlotte (3-1), which has won eight of its last nine meetings with New Jersey. Wesley, Davis and Mashburn made consecutive 3-pointers in a two-minute stretch to double the lead to 96-82 with 2:50 remaining.

Stephon Marbury scored 33 points for the Nets (1-2), who fell to 0-2 at home and have dropped 13 of 14 overall dating to last season. New Jersey scored just 36 points in the second half.

"The big keys tonight were taking Stephon out of the game," said Hornets coach Paul Silas. "He had 33 points but down the stretch, he was only 2-for-4. We did a great job defensively."

The Hornets took the lead for good at 72-70 on a tip-in by Otis Thorpe that closed the third quarter. The Nets still were within 80-76 when Wesley made a pair of layup to give Charlotte an eight-point bulge with 6:52 left.

"We got some open looks in the second half, we just couldn't knock them down," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "When they got stronger, we took a step back. You can't rely on your defense to hold the line for 48 minutes."

New Jersey again cut the deficit to four points on a runner by Kendall Gill. But Wesley hit a jumper, Marbury committed a pair of turnovers and Davis made a technical foul shot for an illegal defense before the Hornets began bombing away.

A 3-pointer by Davis made it 90-80 with 4:48 remaining. Rookie Kenyon Martin scored but Mashburn answered with a 3-pointer for a 93-82 lead. Wesley made a steal and sealed the win with his 3-pointer.

"I got a lot of opportunities, especially in the second half," Wesley said. "The high-post screen was really working well for us. Once I got some layups, I started to get into a rhythm."

"We just had mental breakdowns at the end of the game," Marbury said. "We basically got out of our game plan. ... There are really no excuses, but they took advantage of our inexperience."

P.J. Brown had 12 points and nine rebounds and rookie Jamaal Magloire pulled down 10 boards for the Hornets, who shot 46 percent (35-of-76) and held a 44-33 rebounding edge.

"Our guys were rested and the bench came in and did a great job for us," Silas said. "That's what I thought really won the game for us -- the second unit coming in and playing really hard and growing the lead."

Gill scored 16 points and Johnny Newman added 11 for the Nets, who shot 40 percent (32-of-80), including 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Charlotte was 4-of-9.

"That's a pretty good team over there, very experienced," Scott said. "They got tougher after the first quarter. They got more aggressive, more physical."

Marbury scored 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting in the first period as New Jersey grabbed a 32-24 lead. But Davis scored 10 points and Wesley added seven as Charlotte stormed back and took a 53-51 lead.

"Marbury played a lot of minutes last night and a lot of minutes tonight, so we were just hoping that he would start missing and that's exactly what happened," Silas said.
