Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Michael Finley and Howard Eisley combined for 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 108-96 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Finley and Eisley keyed a 17-6 fourth-quarter spurt that gave the Mavericks a commanding 94-78 lead with 5:44 remaining. Finley, who finished with 26 points, had seven and Eisley added six of his 14 during the decisive run.

Dallas maintained a double-digit lead thereafter.

The Mavericks (3-1) have picked up where they left off last season, when they won 16 of their final 21 games. They also won three of four to start the 1997-98 campaign but finished a dismal 20-62.

"It's very important to get off to a good start," Finley said. "We're still coming together as a team and we still have a lot of games left so a good start always helps."

Raef LaFrentz scored a season-high 23 points for Denver, which has lost 12 of the last 16 meetings with Dallas. LaFrentz had totaled just 21 points in the Nuggets' first three games.

"It's frustrating, we got within five points then we fell apart," LaFrentz said. "The same things keep happening. You always have to be aggressive on both sides of the court. (Going) 1-3 is not going to cut it."

Clinging to a 77-72 lead early in the fourth quarter, Eisley drained an 18-footer and Finley sandwiched two emphatic dunks around one by Denver's Antonio McDyess to get the run underway.

McDyess cut the lead to seven with a layup but Finley canned a 3-pointer from the right sideline, giving Dallas an 86-76 cushion.

After a Nuggets' basket, it was Eisley's turn to take over. Eisley converted a technical foul shot then followed a layup by rookie Eduardo Najera with a 3-pointer and two free throws as the Mavericks forged their largest lead and never looked back.

"Eisley and Finley stepped up in the fourth quarter," Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "You can always rely on Michael, that's why he's our all-star."

Nowitzki scored 11 of his 18 points in the opening quarter as Dallas seized a 28-25 lead after 12 minutes.

Finley and rookie Courtney Alexander took over in the second quarter, scoring nine and eight points, respectively, as Dallas took a 57-46 lead into intermission.

The Mavericks shot 57 percent (20-of-35) in the half while Denver has trailed at the break in all four games this season.

LaFrentz kept the Nuggets close in the third, scoring 13 of his team's 23 points. He ignited a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer and four free throws and James Posey added a short jumper which cut Denver's deficit to 64-61 midway through the session.

"We played pretty well in the third quarter, we just need to put the other three quarters together," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "It's like we're passive or afraid of getting into foul trouble. We have to play 48 minutes like we played in the third quarter tonight."

Dallas led 75-69 entering the final quarter.

Alexander finished with 14 points and Hubert Davis collected 13 for the Mavericks, who shot 49 percent (38-of-77) and converted 24-of-29 free throws.

Robert Pack scored 17 points off the bench, Nick Van Exel had 13 and eight assists and McDyess added 12 and 11 rebounds for Denver, which shot 47 percent (37-of-79) and allowed 22 points off 18 turnovers.
