Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Shawn Marion scored 23 points, had eight rebounds and three steals and Tony Delk added 20 points off the bench, leading the Phoenix Suns to a 100-81 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

The Suns pressured the ball and managed to keep it out of the hands of Tim Duncan and David Robinson. Duncan got only 14 shots and scored 18 points, while Robinson took just seven shots and finished with 11 points. No other Spur reached double figures.

"It was a very impressive game," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "I say it over and over -- when we play hard, we play good. It looked like the defense of last year. We were really active, talking and covering each other."

The Spurs came into the game leading the league in scoring at 106.0 points per game and second in shooting percentage at 49.3. The Suns held them 15 points below their average and limited them to 38.5 percent (30-of-78) from the field.

"The Suns played a great game tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They came with a lot of energy, a lot of aggressiveness. It showed in all facets of the game. And that told the tale."

Clifford Robinson added 15 points, five assists, three steals and three blocked shots for the Suns, who have won four in a row after losing their opener.

Jason Kidd came within one rebound of his 33rd career triple-double, finishing with 10 points, 11 assists and nine boards. He also committed six turnovers.

"Jason was great," Popovich said. "He's going to be a Hall of Fame player and he runs the show."

Delk hit back-to-back jumpers to spark the Suns on a 16-5 run in the second quarter. Samaki Walker had a follow shot that pulled San Antonio within 35-29 with 7:57 left before halftime, but Delk hit from 18 and 21 feet, and the Suns were rolling.

Marion gave Phoenix its biggest lead of the half when he hit a 10-footer to make it 51-34 with 1:35 to go.

"We were burned more by Marion and Delk than we were by anybody on the court," Popovich said.

Phoenix led 53-38 at halftime after shooting 68.4 percent (13-of-19) in the second quarter.

The Suns never let the Spurs get back in the game in the second half, keeping the lead in double digits most of the way with continued pressure.

Through three quarters, the Suns had 14 of their 15 steals as they scored 23 points off 22 turnovers. They committed only 16 turnovers.

"We came out there and we played with intensity from the get-go, and our defense prevailed," Marion said.

"We did a really good job at coming out and establishing our defense," Clifford Robinson added. "When we get our defense established, we're able to get the ball in our guards' hands on the open floor, and we usually make some good things happen."

The Spurs were riding a three-game winning streak but failed in an attempt to get off to the first 4-0 start in franchise history.

"They were more aggressive, things were falling for them and going their way," Duncan said. "That's what happens when you're more aggressive than the other team. I think we were very flat. They were pushing out and they took advantage of that."

Phoenix has started strongly in each of the last four seasons, posting an impressive 23-7 mark in November during that stretch.

The Spurs got within eight points four times in the third quarter, the last at 59-51 with 5:51 to go in the period. The Suns pulled away, though, outscoring San Antonio 19-10 the rest of the quarter and taking a 78-61 on Delk's layup at the buzzer.

In the fourth quarter, Phoenix never let the lead drop under 14 points.
