Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets were looking for top overall draft pick Kenyon Martin to be a spark for them. Tonight he was a beacon.

Martin teamed with Stephon Marbury to get the Nets a double-digit first quarter lead they never gave up as they rolled to a 102-86 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Martin scored 20 points for the time in his professional career and Marbury finished with 31 on 11-of-15 shooting, adding seven assists. The rookie forward out of Cincinnati had scored a total of 24 points in his first three games.

Marbury's brilliance has been the one thing the Nets have been able to count on this season. It was his third straight game with more than 30 points, after back-to-back 33-point games.

The power forward and point guard ran a crisp fast break that sliced through the disorganized Wizards, who were playing their second game in two nights.

Martin and Marbury combined to score 23 points in the first quarter, leading the Nets on a 28-5 run that gave them a 30-13 lead going into the second period.

Martin started the second quarter with back-to-back dunks and Johnny Newman scored on a layup with 10:37 to go in the half, stretching the lead to 36-13.

After Rod Strickland hit a jumper, Newman nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner, giving New Jersey its largest lead, 39-15, with 10:13 left.

Richard Hamilton, who missed the only three shots he took in the first quarter, came alive over the next 4:40. He fired in 14 points to lead the Wizards on a 17-5 surge, capped by his short jumper with 5:33 to go in the quarter that cut the deficit to 44-32.

But Washington could get no closer the rest of the quarter.

When the Wizards sliced the lead to 53-43 on a follow shot by Juwan Howard early in the the third quarter, the Nets answered with a 17-5 run, fueled by three 3-pointers by Marbury and six points from Stephen Jackson. A jumper by Jackson with 6:03 left gave the Nets their largest lead of the period, 70-48.

The Wizards never threatened in the fourth quarter.

Hamilton finished with a career-high 30 points, Strickland added 18 and Howard scored 17 for the Wizards, who have yet to win at home.

The Wizards had won three in a row against the Nets and had won the last three at home in the series.

Jackson finished with 16 points and six assists, Aaron Williams added 12 and nine rebounds and Newman scored 11 for the Nets.

Howard, who hit 7-of-12 from the field, contributed seven rebounds but also committed five fouls and five turnovers. Strickland dished out six assists and had a pair of steals, but gave away the ball four times.
