Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves received a standout performance from an unheralded source and another from their big gun en route to victory.

Chauncey Billups had 31 points and nine assists and Kevin Garnett added 22 and 11 rebounds as the Timberwolves snapped a three-game skid with a 103-92 victory over the struggling Milwaukee Bucks.

Billups and Garnett each scored seven points as the Timberwolves closed with a 21-9 run in the final 5:03 for the win.

Billups, who started in place of point guard and former Buck Terrell Brandon, finished one point shy of his career high and had eight in the decisive final period. He also turned in a huge defensive effort, holding Milwaukee point guard Sam Cassell to just nine points on 2-of-13 shooting.

"I'm comfortable playing both (backcourt) positions. That's the beauty of having me and that's why I think they brought me here," said Billups, who came over from Orlando as a free agent during the offseason. "I have a lot of confidence at the point guard spot. I felt ready for tonight."

"I have a lot of confidence in (Chauncey), it was one of his first opportunities to start and I was anxious to see how he would do in the heat of battle," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "As far as running the team, he did everything we asked of him."

Brandon was sidelined after suffering a sprained ankle in Thursday's loss to Philadelphia.

Garnett rebounded from a dismal first-half performance to score 18 after intermission, including 11 in the fourth quarter. In the second half, he hit 8-of-14 shots and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Bucks were considered one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference but dropped their third straight game and fell to 1-5 on the season.

Milwaukee wasted an outstanding performance by Ray Allen, who nailed 15-of-21 shots and matched a career high with 40 points.

"We've started out on a bad note," Allen said. "It seems to be a different problem every game but it all boils down to getting focused. We have the talent. Our rebounding was horrendous tonight and that's just effort. I felt good but the team didn't do the things we needed to do to get the win."

Garnett canned a short hook in the lane that gave the Wolves an 82-77 advantage with 6:59 to go but Allen drained back-to-back 3-pointers that put the Bucks ahead by a point at the 5:18 mark.

Minnesota regained the lead on Garnett's baseline jumper and Billups capped a 10-2 spurt with a 3-pointer from the left sideline that provided a 92-85 cushion with 2:48 to play.

Wally Szczerbiak collected 15 points and 12 rebounds and Anthony Peeler also scored 15 for the Wolves, who shot 46 percent (39-of-85) and drained 18-of-20 free throws.

"We came away with a huge win on the road," Szczerbiak said. "Flip has really been doing a lot to encourage us and it helped tonight."

Glenn Robinson scored 15 points for Milwaukee, which shot 47 percent (35-of-75) but was outrebounded, 48-32.

"I'd start with the word pride, that's what I told the team after the game," Bucks coach George Karl said. "I was very disappointed. To be outworked and outhustled when we're struggling ... I don't get it. Sam and Glenn went 1-of-13 in the second half. It's hard to win when your starters go 1-of-13."
