Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Antonio McDyess found his game and the Denver Nuggets finally played some defense.

McDyess had his best game of the young season with 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Nuggets smothered the Los Angeles Clippers, 95-79.

The 6-9, 255-pound McDyess led Denver in scoring and rebounding last season but was ranked fourth and third in those categories entering tonight. Slowed by back spasms in the Nuggets' first five games, McDyess turned on the offense, hitting 10-of-18 shots in 32 productive minutes.

"My back felt really good tonight," McDyess said. "I'm more comfortable and relaxed when my back feels good. I don't have to worry about how I land and how I play. I can play more loosely and play my game. We had fun out there and we started to jell and play together."

"I thought Antonio played great," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "He had good rhythm and good footwork and it was good to see him attack the boards like he did."

Denver had allowed more than 100 points in five of its first six contests, surrendering 105.5 points per game -- second most in the NBA. It gave up 29 points in the first quarter tonight but tightened up thereafter.

Over the last threee quarters, the Clippers lost their shooting touch and finished at 34 percent (29-of-86) from the floor, including a dismal 1-of-20 from 3-point range.

"Once we cleaned up the defense and, especially the rebounding, and held them to one shot, we did a good job," Issel said. "After the first quarter we picked up our defensive intensity and held them to 14 points in the second quarter and I think somewhere in the 30- or 40-point range in the second half."

The Nuggets had not held an opponent below 80 points since a 78-77 triumph over Atlanta on February 26 of last season.

Brian Skinner had a career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who fell to 0-3 on the road.

Voshon Lenard scored 19 points off the bench and Nick Van Exel had 14 and nine assists for the Nuggets, who have won seven of the last eight meetings from Los Angeles and five straight at home in the series.

"I'm just trying to help the team and bring some veteran leadership," said Lenard, who is threatening to crack the starting lineup. "As long as we continue to win everything will be groovy. We just need to get on track and win three or four in a row."

Mark Strickland scored 11 points and George McCloud handed out 12 assists for Denver, which shot 43 percent (38-of-88) and but lost the battle on the boards, 56-43. The Nuggets forced 17 turnovers.

Lamar Odom had 10 points, 13 rebounds and five assists but was the only Los Angeles player other than Skinner to score in double figures.

"McDyess and Van Exel hit some big shots for them and opened things up," Skinner said. "Our defense is there but we need to work on our offensive execution."

Skinner exploded in the first quarter, scoring 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting to help the Clippers build a six-point lead. But things came undone quickly in the second period, when Los Angeles was outscored, 27-14, and did not seriously challenge thereafter.

"I don't think we ever got back in the game after the second quarter," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "I was disappointed offensively. We can't make one pass and shoot the ball and we did it on 36-of-86 shots. We shouldn't be shooting 3-pointers if we can only make 1-of-20. We should drive to the basket and get to the foul line."

Tyrone Nesby's short jumper gave the Clippers a 31-23 lead before the Nuggets' reserves took control. Lenard and Strickland hit back-to-back jumpers and Robert Pack and Strickland made layups to forge a 31-31 tie 9:28 remaining in the first half.

Strickland capped the 10-0 run with an eight-footer and two free throws as Denver pulled ahead for good, 35-31, with 8:10 left before halftime.

Up by two points with less than three minutes left in the half, the Nuggets finished strong. Van Exel hit two free throws, Tariq Abdul-Wahad made a layup and Raef LaFrentz knocked down a free throw to make it 50-43 at intermission.

Odom's 3-pointer with 8:11 left in the third quarter shaved the deficit to 55-53 but again the Clippers responded. LaFrentz and Van Exel made consecutive baskets and Abdul-Wahad slammed to open a 61-53 cushion midway through the period.

Clark converted a three-point play to open the fourth quarter and McDyess' jumper made it 76-63. McDyess sandwiched Lenard's 16-footer with a 10-footer and a layup as Denver opened a 91-71 bulge with 3:38 to play.
