Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Despite all the talk regarding the Miami Heat's offseason overhaul and the loss of Alonzo Mourning, old reliable Tim Hardaway can never be overlooked.

Hardaway drained a long 3-pointer with 7.6 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Heat to an emotional 89-86 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

With the score tied, Hardaway fired a 28-footer from above the 3-point circle that swished through the net, putting the Heat on top to stay.

Charlotte center Elden Campbell, who collected 15 points and 17 rebounds, misfired badly on a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.

After scoring 10 points in the first quarter, Hardaway was invisible in the second and third periods, failing to register a single point. But he stepped up in crunch time, sinking two free throws in the waning seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 82-82.

The 12-year veteran finished with 17 points and eight assists. He missed a potential winning 3-pointer Saturday at Phoenix.

"I was confident when I let the ball go," Hardaway said. "I was thinking win all the way. ... I was going to make this 3-pointer and go home. When it's a crucial stage of the game, I have to keep the ball in my hands and make the decisions out there on the court. I think I did a pretty good job of that tonight."

Jamal Mashburn, who came to the Hornets with P.J. Brown from Miami for Eddie Jones and Anthony Mason as the primary figures in a nine-player deal, scored 31 points. Mashburn netted 30 in Charlotte's 83-79 home win on November 3.

"I was a litle anxious in the beginning, wanting to do so well, but I calmed down a little bit," Mashburn said. "We should have won this ball game, that's the bottom line."

Jones scored 19 points for Miami but left the game late in the fourth quarter with a strained right calf. His status is day-to-day.

"I was going to set a pick and as soon as I planted, I heard a pop in my calf," Jones said. "At first, I couldn't walk on it but after I put ice on it my leg felt better."

The Heat took a 66-61 edge into the final period and stretched the lead to 76-66 on a 3-pointer by Jones with 6:45 left. But with Miami ice cold from the field, the Hornets used a 11-2 run, capped by Davis Wesley's 3-pointer, to draw within 78-77 at the 2:33 mark.

Hardaway pushed the lead to three with an 18-footer less than a minute later but Mashburn drained two free throws and Wesley nailed another 3-pointer, giving the Hornets an 82-80 lead with 35 seconds left. Hardaway's free throws with 12 seconds left forced overtime.

After Mashburn opened the extra session with a basket, Brian Grant tied it with a short shot and answered Wesley's 20-footer with a baseline jumper that forged an 86-86 tie with 48 seconds left.

Mashburn missed a 25-footer on Charlotte's next possession but Hardaway's straightaway bomb was on target.

The Hornets looked disorganized as they attempted the potential shot and Campbell looked to pass before being forced to fire up the errant 3-pointer.

"I was calling timeout and the players did not hear me," said Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "Naturally we would like to have seen Mash or one of those guys shoot it but we rushed up the court and just didn't get a good look."

The Heat shot 55 percent (23-of-42) from the floor in the first half but a dismal 31 percent (11-of-36) after intermission.

"We don't deal well with prosperity," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We have difficulty hanging on to leads and sustaining good play. We held on and got very lucky in the end to win. We will take anything we can get at this stage."

Wesley collected 23 points for Charlotte, which shot 36 percent (30-of-84) and committed 18 turnovers.

Mason had 16 points and nine assists and Grant collected 15 and eight for Miami, which converted 16-of-21 free throws and was outrebounded, 49-39.
