Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Latrell Sprewell made a shot from the seat of his pants to end the first quarter but that was the last miracle of the night for the New York Knicks.

Lamar Odom scored 16 points, including a crucial baseline jumper with 44 seconds remaining, as the youthful Los Angeles Clippers outexecuted the veteran New York Knicks down the stretch, pulling out an impressive 78-74 victory.

Sprewell wound up with a loose ball at the free throw line off a wild scramble and before he could get up to beat the first-quarter buzzer, he decided to set and fire from his seat. The ball went in and New York had a 23-13 lead after 12 minutes.

"I lost the ball in the first place trying to go left," Sprewell said. "I ended up recovering it and I got a good look at the clock. There was one second (left) so I tossed it up and it trickled in."

Losers of their previous two games by a combined 36 points, the Clippers outscored the Knicks in each of the remaining quarters and Tyrone Nesby's jumper snapped a 70-70 tie with 1:49 to play, putting Los Angeles ahead to stay.

"We just did not play well tonight," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "When you don't play well in this league, you lose. But you have to give (the Clippers) credit, they came out and played a good game."

Sean Rooks slammed to give the Clippers a four-point lead but Allan Houston answered with a 21-footer. Odom dribbled down by himself, took Larry Johnson to the left baseline before pulling up for a 15-footer that swished through with 44 seconds to go.

"I really wanted to perform, especially with everyone here at home," Odom said. "We needed this victory for ourselves. Hopefully, this can be the start of a winning streak. It was physical underneath, but that's the Knicks' style."

Houston made two free throws after an ill-advised foul by Nesby with 11.2 seconds left. But Jeff McInnis ended New York's hopes of another miracle shot when he took a long pass from Nesby and beat New York's pressure defense for an easy layup with seven seconds to play.

"We feel like we can play with anyone," McInnis said. "Everybody we go up against, we feel we can beat them."

Johnson scored 20 points, Houston had 17 and Sprewell added 12, making just four of his 13 orthodox shots from the field as the Knicks dropped to 0-2 on their three-game West Coast swing. New York will visit Phoenix on Friday to conclude the trip.

Marcus Camby had nine points and 13 rebounds for the Knicks, who shot 39 percent (31-of-80) and lost the battle on the boards, 48-43.

Rooks scored 14 points off the bench and Eric Piatkowski and McInnis added 12 and 10 apiece, respectively, as the Clippers improved to 3-3 at the Staples Center.

"It's still all a process in which we are not going to get overly excited," Rooks said. "We are going to have nights like the other night and nights like tonight."

Sprewell scored 10 first-half points and the Knicks held a 42-35 advantage at intermission. But the Clippers continued to creep up and made a serious move midway through the third period.

Michael Olowokandi knocked down a four-footer, Nesby a layup and McInnis drilled a 17-footer to forge a 46-46 tie with 5:08 remaining in the quarter. Houston responded with three straight baskets as the battle-tested Knicks appeared to stem the tide of Los Angeles' run.

But the Clippers would not go away and Piatkowski's 3-pointer with 1:27 left in the third quarter capped an 8-2 run and forged a 54-54 tie.

Kurt Thomas answered with a layup as New York moved into the fourth quarter with a two-point advantage.

Derek Strong got Los Angeles even with a pair of free throws and the Clippers took their first lead since the early moments of the opening period when Piatkowski hit a 24-footer to make it 61-58 with 10:26 to play.

Johnson made two free throws and a layup and Sprewell hit a jumper to give New York the lead back, 64-61, with 9:05 left.

The game featured seven ties and four lead changes, the last of which came on Nesby's jumper with 1:49 to go.
