Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- A career night by Shawn Marion resulted in a benchmark victory for the Phoenix Suns.

Marion scored 19 points, grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds, blocked five shots and had a career-best four steals as the Suns matched the best start in franchise history with a 99-78 triumph over the Dallas Mavericks.

Rodney Rogers scored a season-high 19 points for the Suns, who have won seven straight after an opening night loss at Golden State at the buzzer. The 7-1 start matches the mark of the 1980-81 squad, which won 57 games and finished with the best record in the Western Conference.

Former Sun Steve Nash collected 19 points and six assists for the Mavericks, who had won three of the last four meeetings between the teams.

The Mavericks shot just 38.7 percent (29-of-75) from the floor and became the latest team to fall victim to Phoenix's stifling defense. The Suns also forced 23 turnovers against Dallas, which was averaging an NBA-low 14 per game.

"Obviously, we didn't shoot the ball that well," Nash said. "I think we gave up too much on the offensive glass and we gave up too many easy buckets. That can really hurt you, especially on the road."

"We didn't block out very well, we gave them too many second chances," Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "Marion really killed us on the glass. We didn't really stop their break and had too many turnovers which they made into baskets. We made a lot of mistakes and when you want to stay in a game on the road, that shouldn't happen."

In their last four games, Phoenix has held opponents to an average of 80 points and 39 percent shooting from the field.

"We emphasized that big in training camp," Marion said. "When we do it, we shut down people, get defensive rebounds and they get no second chances, so it's a big plus for us."

While Dallas was finding rough going from the field, Phoenix was red-hot, making 26-of-42 shots in the second half.

"I don't think they played great, we were just real poor," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "As bad as we were playing, I thought we were going to have a chance to win but it kept on getting worse and worse."

Marion made 9-of-18 shots and grabbed six offensive boards in 42 minutes. His previous rebounding high was 14, accomplished three times.

"I told him he probably could have had 30 rebounds if he could just catch the ball," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "He's unbelievable. How do you get 19 rebounds with his size and as thin as he is. It's just effort and athleticism and having a nose for the ball."

The game was tied, 42-42, following a six-footer by Dallas' Shawn Bradley 10 seconds into the second half. But former Maverick Jason Kidd sank a 15-footer 15 seconds later to ignite an 8-0 spurt.

Cliff Robinson had a dunk off a feed from Kidd, who hit two free throws with 9:20 to go to put Phoenix ahead, 48-42. After a missed layup by Greg Buckner, Marion buried a 17-footer from the left corner for an eight-point bulge.

The lead was 56-51 with 4:59 remaining in the third quarter when Marion sank a 10-footer and had a tip-in around a 22-footer by Mario Elie. Phoenix held a 73-66 advantage with 9:34 to go in the fourth when Rogers and rookie Daniel Santiago had consecutive baskets to push the lead back to double digits.

The Suns lost Chris Dudley for a couple of weeks when their backup center suffered a left ankle sprain midway through the first quarter. X-rays were negative but the veteran center will be sidelined two to three weeks.

Phoenix already is without stars Tom Gugliotta and Penny Hardaway, who are each nursing injuries.
