Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- As a player, Isiah Thomas teamed with Joe Dumars to form one of the best backcourts in the NBA, leading the Detroit Pistons to back-to-back titles. In his return to Detroit as a coach, his current backcourt may have brought back some memories.

Guards Reggie Miller scored 30 points and Travis Best added 22 to lead the Pacers and Thomas to their fifth straight win, 92-88, to complete a home-and-home sweep of the Pistons.

"It's always good to come back here," said Thomas, who received a warm ovation before the game. "I wouldn't trade the feeling from when I went out on that floor for anything. It was great to realize that the fans still care about what we did here. I just hope the people of this city will always feel about me the way I feel about them."

Miller and Best each had eight assists as the Pacers improved to 5-0 against the Eastern Conference.

"(Thomas) approached this like any other game," Miller said. "He acted the same as Coach (Larry) Bird did going back to Boston. They would never say it was a big deal, but you could see it in their eyes. With all the tradition Isiah has here we really wanted to win the game for him."

Austin Croshere had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Jermaine O'Neal grabbed 11 boards for Indiana, which shot just 40 percent (34-of-85).

The Pacers trailed by as many as 11 points in the third quarter but Miller scored 15 points in the final period, when Indiana outscored Detroit, 18-12. Miller put the Pacers ahead for good, 87-86, when he sank a layup off a backdoor cut and pass from Best with 1:47 remaining.

Each team failed to score on its next possession and Sam Perkins stole a bad pass from Jerry Stackhouse and turned it into a layup for Miller, giving Indiana an 89-86 lead with 25 seconds left.

"I thought we played hard enough to win and we played good enough defense to hold a good team to 40 percent shooting," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "But in the second half in crucial situations, we had some turnovers. We knew what they were trying to do and we knew what we wanted to do. We had people wide open, but didn't get the ball to them or had missed shots."

Stackhouse scored 29 points and Cedric Ceballos added a season-high 19 in 23 minutes off the bench for Detroit, which fell to 1-2 at home.

"We can't let teams come back from deficits like this," said Stackhouse. "We had an opportunity to win tonight, but that's not (any) consolation. We felt it was a game we should have won."

After a turnover by Stackhouse, Miller made a free throw for a 90-86 lead with 21 seconds to go. Chucky Atkins made two free throws to trim the margin to 90-88 with 14 seconds left. Miller answered with a pair three seconds later.

Ben Wallace missed a desperation 3-pointer from the left wing and Tyus Edney grabbed the long rebound as time ran out.

Miller made 3-of-7 shots from behind the arc, including a 27-footer that gave the Pacers a 16-4 lead with 5:42 left in the first quarter. Ceballos scored seven points as Detroit outscored Indiana 15-9 to close the first.

Detroit's first lead was 31-29 on a layup by Ceballos with just over nine minutes left in the second. Stackhouse and Mateen Cleaves combined on an 11-4 burst that gave the Pistons a 55-44 lead when Cleaves made a free throw 18 seconds before halftime.

Jeff Foster scored six of his eight points on Indiana's 14-5 run run that sliced Detroit's lead to 65-63 when Croshere made a 3-pointer with 4:28 left.
