Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Cuttino Mobley scored eight of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Houston Rockets extended its home winning streak to five games with an 84-80 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

The Rockets trailed 65-64 to start the fourth quarter but an alley-oop from Maurice Taylor to Steve Francis opened the period and a pair of free throws by Kenny Thomas with 4:41 remaining gave the Rockets the lead for good at 76-75.

Derrick Coleman's hook shot drew Charlotte within 78-77 with 3:20 to play, but baskets by Taylor and Mobley gave Houston an 82-77 cushion with 1:21 left.

"Whenever he's in there, it makes their defense play us honest," said Francis. "Whoever is open is going to get the shot. Tonight he had a couple of good looks. He's definitely an exciting player to watch."

Mobley started for Walt Williams, who was sidelined with a strained groin and hip. He played 45 minutes and made 10-of-16 shots.

"That's me and Stevie's quarter," Mobley said. "Coach says that big-time players make big-time shots, and I don't care if I start or not. But Walt was hurt and it was my job tonight. I do like the minutes, though. But we got the W and that's what counts."

Baron Davis scored 20 points for the Hornets, who have lost four in a row. Jamal Mashburn added 18 points and 11 rebounds but was scoreless in the final period.

Charlotte trailed 47-41 at halftime but rallied to take the lead in the third quarter. Mashburn scored six points in an 18-5 run that gave the Hornets a 59-52 lead with 4:47 left. The eight-foot jump-shot would be his last points of the game before turning the ball over twice before the final period ended.

"We lost the game, but we didn't lose any confidence," Mashburn said. "We have to play a full 48 minutes. We can't play in spurts and that's the biggest key to what this team needs to do."

Mobley scored seven points in the remainder of the period as the Rockets closed to 65-64 entering the final 12 minutes.

The Rockets are 5-1 when holding opponents under 100 points. After a home loss to Minnesota in its season opener, Houston has won five straight at the Compaq Center by a combined 70 points. They committed a season-low 11 turnovers.

"Houston is good," Mashburn said, "Especially their guards, Francis and Mobley. Everyone else plays off of them. They came to win tonight."

Taylor scored 17 points for the Rockets, who shot 47 percent (35-of-74) and improved to 12-2 at home in the all-time series.

David Wesley scored 14 points and Coleman added 12 for the Hornets, who shot 44 percent (36-of-82) and attempted just 10 free throws, making five.
