Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse had a successful homecoming, scoring 25 points to lead a balanced attack as the Detroit Pistons handed the reeling Charlotte Hornets their fifth straight loss, 96-89.

Stackhouse, a native of Kinston who played at the University of North Carolina, made just 7-of-21 shots. But he was the only Detroit starter to score in double figures. Stackhouse purchased about 70 tickets for friends and family.

"It's always great to come back home, even though it hits me in the wallet," Stackhouse joked. "But it's always great to come back and see friends and family. That always makes me feel good."

Jerome Williams had 10 points and 12 rebounds while Mikki Moore and Cedric Ceballos also scored 10 points apiece for the Pistons, who shot 45 percent (34-of-76) and won for the first time in seven games when failing to score 100 points.

Detroit held a 48-38 advantage in rebounds and limited Charlotte to 40.5 percent (34-of-84) shooting. Starting center Eric Montross was the only one of 12 Pistons to go scoreless, missing two shots in 13 minutes. Detroit's bench outscored Charlotte's reserves, 52-20.

"I thought it was a good defensive effort on our part," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "We didn't panic when we were down at the half. We wore them down. It was a tough back-to-back (nights) for them. I was very pleased with our effort on the defensive boards. Mateen (Cleaves) and Mikki gave us a huge lift."

The Pistons improved to just 10-16 all-time in Charlotte.

Jamal Mashburn had 21 points and 12 rebounds and David Wesley scored 20 points for the Hornets, who have not reached the century mark since opening the season with a 106-82 triumph over the Atlanta Hawks.

"We just have to play basketball," Wesley said. "We have to shoot baskets and grab rebounds. We're thinking too much. We're not snakebitten. We let them come out in the third quarter and get back in it. That's a question of effort. We need to come out with energy. I think we all need to re-evaluate our production and our effort. That starts with me and includes everyone."

Cleaves, a rookie, made a free throw with 18 seconds left in the third quarter to trigger a 19-6 run for the Pistons. Jud Buechler drilled a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left to cut the deficit to 65-64.

Detroit shot just 39 percent (16-of-41) in the first half but made 9-of-18 shots and outscored Charlotte, 25-17, in the third quarter.

Ceballos had five points in the decisive run that was capped by Williams' follow shot, giving Detroit an 83-73 lead with 5:56 remaining.

Mashburn scored 12 points and Wesley added 10 in the first half to help the Hornets grab a 48-38 lead.

"We chart layups and tonight we missed 12 layups in the first half," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "That should have been 24 points. If you miss layups, it puts a burden on the offense. We missed point-blank layups, not where someone was coming at us. That's a matter of concentration. We've got to concentrate."

Stackhouse started the third quarter with a pair of free throws to ignite a 12-4 run. Ben Wallace, who had six points and eight boards, capped it with a layup to trim the margin to 52-50 with 6:44 to go.

Elden Campbell answered with a short jumper and Wesley followed with a free throw, pushing Charlotte's lead to 55-50 with 6:14 left.
