Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks are getting the reputation as road warriors after another fourth-quarter comeback in a hostile environment.

Dirk Nowitzki scored seven of his 20 points in the final 4:35 as the Mavericks erased an eight-point deficit midway through the final period and rallied for a 91-88 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies, who played without Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

The Mavericks have posted come-from-behind victories on the road on consecutive days, with Nowitzki leading the way both times. They were also helped by the absence of Abdur-Rahim and a third-quarter injury to Grizzlies guard Michael Dickerson.

Nowitzki scored a season-high 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Dallas rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 7:07 for a 99-95 victory on Friday over Seattle at KeyArena, where it had not won in more than three years.

"I think we struggled for large parts of both games but we stuck with it and our perseverance paid off both times," said Mavericks guard Steve Nash, who hit the go-ahead basket in the waning seconds of Friday's win. "We were fortunate that Shareef could not play, unfortunately the reason he can't is upsetting to all of us."

"I feel good about my game, it's my role to score," Nowitzki said. "As a team, we're not playing very well but we're winning."

The Mavericks trailed 80-72 with 7:42 remaining tonight before Nowitzki again took over. He capped a 10-0 run with three free throws, giving Dallas its first lead of the quarter.

With Dallas clinging to an 89-86 lead, Nowitzki responded with a 15-foot baseline jumper with 44 seconds left.

Othella Harrington, who scored 23 points, cut the deficit to three with a layup eight seconds later but Vancouver's Damon Jones did not see coach Sidney Lowe signal for a timeout and instead misfired on an off-balance 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

"They didn't call it, they didn't see me trying to call it and Jones just fired up a three," Lowe said. "We didn't execute in the last five minutes, we didn't get the shots we wanted."

Abdur-Rahim, who leads the Grizzlies with 18.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, had played in 228 straight games but left the team to be with his mother, who suffered a stroke.

Dickerson sprained his left ankle on a drive to the basket late in the third quarter and did not return.

"We were handed a very lucky break with Dickerson and Shareef out," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Give them a lot of credit for the way they played with two key players out."

"Shareef's our franchise player, with a guy like him on the floor, it gives the team one more option to go to," Harrington said.

The Mavericks improved to 3-2 on a six-game road trip that concludes Monday in Utah.

Vancouver registered the most lopsided victory in franchise history with a 101-74 triumph at Dallas on November 8. The Grizzlies have not won since, losing their last four contests.

Hubert Davis scored 20 points and Michael Finley added 16 for Dallas, which shot 45 percent (33-of-73) from the field and made 7-of-16 three-pointers.

Dickerson had 18 points and Kevin Edwards contributed 13 for the Grizzlies, who shot 46 percent (36-of-78) but were outrebounded 44-36, including 13-5 in the fourth quarter.

Harrington scored 13 points in the first quarter as Vancouver forged a 25-23 lead after 12 minutes. Dickerson had eight in the second quarter, giving the Grizzlies a 49-47 halftime lead. They led 68-62 entering the final period.
