Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers showed the Chicago Bulls they are more than Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Horace Grant and Ron Harper got off to quick starts and rookie Tom Penberthy had the best game of his brief career as the Lakers fought off the Bulls, 104-96, for their fourth win in five games.

The only loss during that stretch came Saturday, when O'Neal sat out with a sprained left ankle and the Lakers were beaten at Denver. O'Neal returned tonight and collected 14 points and nine rebounds, well below his averages of 28.2 and 13.2.

"I just wanted to test (the ankle) out and see where it was," said O'Neal, who had acupuncture in the morning. "I thought I had an OK presence out there. We really should have blew this team away but we played down to their level. They had more energy. They had nothing to lose. We were just coasting. We did not play with the killer instinct."

Bryant picked up some of the slack with 22 points and a season-high 12 rebounds but his streak of five 30-point games came to an end. Instead, it was the role players who took charge.

Harper scored a season-high points 15 points and Grant added 14. The former Bulls combined for 22 points in the first period as the Lakers grabbed a 28-24 lead.

"We could have played better offense against a Chicago defense that is struggling," Grant said. "Unfortunately we didn't do it. We're fortunate to get a win. The energy level was not there tonight and until we learn to meet the other team's intensity level, we're not going to be successful. I don't know why but it's not there. A team like Chicago that's struggling, we should have beaten them by 20 points."

Penberthy, an unknown guard from The Master's College, scored 11 of his career-high 13 points in the second quarter, helping Los Angeles maintain a halftime lead.

"I got an opportunity to shoot tonight," Penberthy said. "I'm not going to force any shots. But tonight Chicago seemed to be sagging on Kobe and Shaq so that left me open and I feel I can knock down shots the way I was."

After the Bulls cut a 14-point deficit to 93-88 with 4:04 left, reserve forward Robert Horry drilled 3-pointers on consecutive trips to rebuild the lead to 99-90 with 2:50 remaining.

"We got the job done," said Bryant, whose team shot 52 percent (41-for-79) from the field. "This team got beat by 45 points last night and they come in here and play against the world champs. They've got a team with seven rookies. The walk into Staples Center and their eyes get big. They come out ready to play and hit all kinds of shots."

Ron Mercer scored 27 points and Elton Brand had 17 and 15 rebounds for the Bulls, who extended their losing streak to five. Their only win of the season came against Orlando on November 9.

"We have to go out and play every night," Mercer said. "We can't take nights off. Despite the loss, it's encouraging. It was a tough game but we fought hard and didn't give up. We snuck up on them a little bit. We have to take this into our next game and get ready to play."

Khalid El-Amin added 15 points and Ron Artest contributed 14 for Chicago, which shot 47 percent (42-for-89).
