Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets held on for a win on the West Coast and did it because of one person -- coach Byron Scott.

Veteran Johnny Newman hit a pair of huge baskets in the final 2:10 as New Jersey picked up its third straight road win, 86-85 over the Los Angeles Clippers.

It was the Nets' first road game against the Clippers since January 29, when they completed a heartbreaking 0-4 road trip with a 98-93 loss.

Included in last year's brutal trip were last-second setbacks at Seattle and Vancouver. Tonight, the Nets watched as Sean Rooks' length-of-the-court 3-point attempt missed the basket by 20 feet.

"It's just going our way this year," said guard Kendall Gill, who scored eight points. "It seems fate is on our side."

The Clippers got within a point with 2.7 seconds left when Lamar Odom hit a 3-pointer while falling to the floor. Newman missed a pair of free throws, but Los Angeles was out of timeouts.

"Odom's 3-pointer probably would have beaten us last year at the buzzer," Gill said. "This year, it's not happening."

Stephan Marbury scored 28 points and rookie Kenyon Martin added 19 and 15 rebounds as the Nets improved to 3-0 on the road. Last season, they picked up their third road win on January 8.

"Byron's the difference," said Marbury, whose team went 9-32 on the road in 1999-2000.

A member of three NBA championship teams with the Los Angeles Lakers, Scott has guided New Jersey to its first three-game road winning streak since January 27-31, 1998.

"This was not a pretty win for us tonight, but we'll take it any day," said Scott, a first-year coach whose team continues its four-game trip on Wednesday.

"Very important to win this game," Marbury added. "It allows us to open our road trip on a high note."

The Nets held on for their third straight win overall after leading by eight points with 5:55 to play.

After Corey Maggette provided a spark off the bench to get the Clippers within a point, Marbury sank a 3-pointer for a 79-75 lead with 2:53 left. Marbury missed a pair of free throws, but Newman hit two huge baskets to pad the lead.

Newman sank a corner jumper to make it 81-75 and followed a free throw by Odom with a 3-pointer from the right corner to give the Nets an 84-78 edge with 48 seconds left.

"I was in the right place at the right time," Newman said. "Whether I miss them or make them, I like to take them."

Odom scored 24 points and got Los Angeles within one again when he nailed a wild 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining.

"It always hurts to lose, especially when we felt we could have won," he said. "We were in a sitution where we felt we were supposed to win, but we just didn't do what we wanted to do."

Newman finished with 13 points and rookie Stephen Jackson added 12 for the Nets, who have won three straight games for the first time since March.

They won despite going 11-of-24 from the free-throw line and getting outrebounded, 54-37.

Michael Olowokandi scored 14 points and rookie Quentin Richardson added 13 for the Clippers, who fell to 2-5 at home this season and 4-8 overall.

"I just think in the course of an NBA season those close games seem to even out," coach Alvin Gentry said. "You seem to lose your share and win your share."

Maggette played only two minutes before dunking and sinking a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter to keep the Clippers within three points. He and Richardson combined for 20 points in just 29 minutes off the bench but could not help Los Angeles overcome 21 turnovers.

"With Quentin Richardson and me, I think we could have pulled it out," Maggette said. "If we would have stayed in longer, we could have pulled it out."

Odom shot 7-of-11 from the floor in the second half to help keep it close. But he was silent in the first half, scoring six points on 1-of-7 shooting.

"Today I wasn't `Mr. Tough Guy,'" Odom said. "This team needs me so much for hustle, points and my head. I can't have these lapses."
