Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Two nights after Vince Carter had one of the best games in franchise history, the Toronto Raptors struggled through one of the worst.

Jamal Mashburn had 25 points and eight rebounds and rookie Jamaal Magloire added 16 and eight off the bench to lead the Charlotte Hornets to a 100-64 romp over the Raptors.

Mashburn connected on 10-of-18 shots as the Hornets won their second game in a row after losing five straight. Magloire, a Toronto native, hit 5-of-6 shots as Charlotte shot 52 percent (42-of-81).

"It feels great, but it feels even better winning," Magliore said. "It's good to score and to do well as well. If we continue to play the way we are, the sky's the limit. I think every game is special. It's great to come back and play in Toronto 'cause I'm playing amongst my friends and family."

David Wesley had 15 points and six assists for the Hornets, who shot better than 50 percent for the first time since hitting 35-of-62 shots in a season-opening 106-82 triumph over Atlanta on October 31.

"It's not all about stopping one man. They have a good team," Mashburn said. "They have an inside presence with Antonio Davis and a good guard with Mark Jackson. We just put the full effort out tonight. They're a pretty good ballclub and we're trying to be a great ballclub, and we're still working on it. I think we played very well together."

Carter, who pushed his league-leading average to 31.6 after scoring an NBA season-high 48 points in Saturday's 111-102 victory over Milwaukee, was held to 20. He made only 7-of-22 shots and played just three minutes in the fourth quarter.

Toronto shot an abysmal 27 percent (24-of-89), breaking the previous franchise low of 29 percent in a 105-69 loss to Orlando on April 10, 1997. The 64 points were four less then the Raptors' previous low, set in a 95-68 defeat against the Magic on March 29, 1998. Both of those defeats also came at home.

Davis had 12 rebounds for Toronto, which has lost two of three following a four-game winning streak. Forward Charles Oakley and guard Dell Curry had the worst offensive performances, each missing 7-of-8 shots.

"For some reason, we're not understanding that it's going to take 12 guys to win basketball games," Davis said. "We're going through periods where we're not playing well as team. We're struggling offensively. We can't rely on Vince to score 40 points 'cause that's not going to happen (every night). There's no excuse for the way we played tonight. I think we were all embarrassed with the way we performed."

The Raptors were not terrible from the outset and held a 12-7 lead with 5:08 left in the first quarter. P.J. Brown, who had 14 points and nine rebounds, answered with a short jumper and Magloire followed with a 19-footer to pull the Hornets within 12-11 with 3:49 to go.

Four different players scored as Charlotte got the final eight points of the period, taking a 24-18 lead on a basket by Mashburn with 26 seconds left.

Toronto shot 32 percent (7-of-22) in the first quarter and scored the first eight points of the second to grab a 26-24 lead on a basket by Kevin Willis with 9 1/2 minutes left. Brown responded with a 14-footer to trigger a 10-0 run. Wesley's jumper capped it, giving the Hornets a 34-26 advantage with just over seven minutes to play before halftime.

The Raptors went scoreless for a 3:19 span, during which the Hornets ran off 11 points and stretched the margin to 50-30 on Mashburn's 3-pointer. He had 17 points in the first half, when Charlotte built a 52-34 advantage.

Toronto did not get the margin below 15 points in the third and trailed, 70-48, entering the final period.

Baron Davis scored four of his nine points in Charlotte's 11-1 run that opened an 85-51 bulge with 6:57 to play. He also had nine of 30 assists for the Hornets, who committed just 15 turnovers.
