Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- When the Dallas Mavericks finally decided to go big, they came up very small.

After getting back in the game with a funky five-guard lineup, the Mavericks could not overcome a pair of mistakes in the final minute by 7-6 center Shawn Bradley and suffered a 116-110 loss to the feuding Seattle SuperSonics.

With his team trailing by 10 points late in the third quarter, Dallas coach Don Nelson went to a lineup of guards Steve Nash, Howard Eisley, Hubert Davis, rookie Courtney Alexander and All-Star Michael Finley.

Finley was the tallest of the group at 6-7, but the small lineup confused the SuperSonics. The Mavericks used their advantages in quickness and outside shooting to cut the deficit to 90-89 in the final minute of the period.

"He went with his smalls and we went with our smalls," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "I'd have to say that even though the Mavericks lost, I am sure the Mavericks fans enjoyed the game."

"In the fourth quarter they went with small people and we don't know what to do with it," Seattle guard Gary Payton said. "We finally got some shots and we got some rebounds."

Nelson stuck with a guard-laden lineup in the fourth quarter and a 3-pointer by Davis, who scored a career-high 32 points, gave the Mavericks a 100-98 lead with 7:15 remaining. The game remained tight until the final minute, when Bradley blundered.

With Dallas trailing 112-110, Bradley -- the tallest player in the NBA -- had his short jumper blocked by the 6-4 Payton. On the next possession, Bradley rebounded a miss by Payton but threw an elbow and was called for an offensive foul, costing the Mavs a crucial possession.

Seattle rookie Desmond Mason rebounded his own missed jumper and was fouled. He made both free throws for a 114-110 lead with 16 seconds to go, and Ruben Patterson added a clinching dunk before the buzzer.

Payton collected 28 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and the go-ahead basket with 2:01 remaining. Patterson added 23 points and 11 rebounds for the SuperSonics, who avenged a 99-95 home loss to Dallas on Friday.

"I thought we kept our composure real well," Westphal said. "We really needed that win. We feel they owed it to us after coming into our place and taking that win."

Westphal took Payton out of the game with 8:18 to play and the two argued on the sidelines. Payton returned with 5:45 left.

"He's going to respect me or I'm not going to play for him. Period," Payton said. "If he say something bad to me, and I think it's bad, he's going to respect me before that or he won't have me playing for him. That's all I've got to say about it. I'm going to be a professional about it and leave it alone. He's going to respect me on the bench. If I respect him, he's going to respect me.

"It doesn't matter about what he said to me but it was a disrespectful thing that he did. If I disrespect him, then he can disrespect me back. But don't disrespect me when I'm trying to help. If he does that again, then it's going to be a problem."

Westphal had nothing to say about his discussion with Payton, but the All-Star guard rambled on.

"I'm not worried about him," Payton said. "I'm worried about these 12 guys on my basketball team. I don't give a (bleep) about him. I'm going to go play for them. That's it. I'm not going to make any trouble. I'm just going to let y'all know, if he does it again, he won't have me playing for him."

Payton credited his teammates for getting his head back in the game.

"The guys had to calm me down and then I thought about it and I said. `I'm not playing for him, I'm playing for these guys,'" he said. "Once I calmed down and got into it, it's over with. I don't care. I don't give a (darn) if we don't have to talk anymore or see each other anymore. I'm playing for these dudes, these other 12 guys and I don't give a damn about him."

Finley scored 23 points and Nash added 16 and 12 assists for the Mavs, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Bradley had 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks, but also committed five fouls and five turnovers.

After Davis' seventh 3-pointer gave Dallas the lead, Brent Barry scored for Seattle. But Nash answered with a 3-pointer for a 103-100 lead with 6:37 to play. Dallas was 12-of-26 from behind the arc.

"I really give the team a lot of credit in the second half," Nelson said. "They could have folded their tent, but they found a way to get back into the game, compete and hustle."

Payton fed Emanual Davis for a basket, then made a short jumper for a 110-107 lead with 2:27 to go. Finley's 3-pointer tied it, but Payton untied it when he went around Nash for a layup with 2:02 left.

Mason scored 14 points and Rashard Lewis and Vin Baker added 12 apiece for Seattle, which shot 48 percent (43-of-90) and held a 50-33 rebounding advantage. Lewis grabbed nine rebounds.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 12 points despite a sprained left shoulder for Dallas, which shot 50 percent (39-of-78) but allowed 60 points in the paint.

Mason scored 12 points and Patterson added 11 in the first half, when the Sonics shot 56.5 percent (26-of-46) and bolted to a 64-50 lead. But Davis was on fire in the third period, making 8-of-10 shots, including four 3-pointers.

"I started to feel comfortable with my shots in the third quarter when I made a couple of quick shots off the bat," Davis said. "They were giving me that shot so I had to take because we were down by 14 points."
