Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers matched their best start in 12 years, using a balanced attack and a stifling defense to shut down the Miami Heat, 86-67.

Andre Miller scored 13 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 10 and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who are 8-3 for the first time since the 1988-89 season.

"That was our best defensive effort so far," said Ilgauskas, who notched his second double-double of the season. "We know that they're a great team, despite the fact that (Alonzo) Mourning is not playing. Tonight they couldn't make their shots and we took advantage of that."

Miami's 67 points were the third fewest in franchise history. The 19-point loss was its worst at American Airlines Arena, which opened last January. The Heat was booed as they left the floor.

"I have been here for six years and have taken a lot of hits, but I've never felt so embarrassed for the team, the fans and myself as I have tonight." Heat coach Pat Riley said. "Our guys absolutely put nothing into the game whatsoever. From the coaching standpoint and the player standpoint, we were simply not ready to play."

Anthony Mason collected 16 points and nine rebounds for Miami, which shot just 33 percent (25-of-75) from the field. The Heat are 26th in the NBA in field-goal percentage and fell to 0-3 when shooting less than 40 percent.

In front of 14,755, the smallest home crowd since the facility opened, Miami fell below .500 at 5-6.

Cleveland, the league's best shooting team at 48 percent, led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter. Miller scored nine points during a 23-4 run that began in the third quarter and gave the Cavs a 71-48 lead.

The Heat had cut the deficit to 48-44 on Bruce Bowen's 3-pointer with 4:43 left in the third period. But Miami got no closer as the Cavs began their run.

The Heat shot a dismal 26 percent in the first half and trailed 36-27 at intermission.

"Basically, we wanted to force their big guys to shoot jump shots and beat us from the outside," said Cavs center Robert Traylor, who scored 11 points. "We didn't let them get a lot of putbacks and kept the big guys from coming in the paint and scoring any baskets."

Cleveland got off to a slow start, committing eight turnovers in the first quarter. But the league's sloppiest team had just nine thereafter.

These two teams meet again on Friday in Cleveland.

"We played well," said Cavs guard Trajan Langdon, who scored 12 points. "But we get them again in two days and must be ready. The team's start is a good start, but it's also a long season. We've just got to take it game by game and don't look behind, don't look ahead."
