Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets used a parade to the free-throw line to march to their fifth straight win.

Jamal Mashburn scored 30 points and the Hornets attempted 19 free throws in the pivotal second quarter as they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 109-98, for their highest output of the season.

Charlotte trailed 34-31 early in the second period but began to attack the basket. The Hornets used a 12-0 run to take the lead for good and push the Cavaliers into the penalty situation, then made 9-of-11 free throws over the final 6 1/2 minutes, opening a 60-50 halftime lead.

Elden Campbell scored a season-high 23 points and emerging Baron Davis had his second triple-double in three games for the Hornets, whose winning streak followed a five-game losing streak. Davis had 14 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.

"Baron is really coming along," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "He's giving us a sustained effort every night, which is what you have to have from a point guard. He has great athleticism. He reminds me of Jason Kidd. He can rebound, shoot and make assists."

"I take that as a tremendous compliment, because I try to pattern my game after him," said Davis, who is averaging 14.6 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds in his last five games.

Charlotte took 42 foul shots, making 34. Cleveland was 23-of-26 from the line.

Lamond Murray scored a season-high 30 points for the Cavaliers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Cleveland has lost four consecutive visits to Charlotte and four in a row in the series.

"We didn't have it tonight," Cavs coach Randy Wittman said. "We had foul problems, especially in the first half. The first quarter, they shot fouls on every foul on the guy shooting jump shots."

Davis scored five points in the second-quarter surge, when the Hornets drew four fouls from the Cavs. The final one moved Charlotte into the bonus and Davis split a pair for a 43-34 lead with 7:22 remaining.

"It wasn't about the offense or Xs and Os," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "It was about attacking. It was about getting the ball and going to the basket and we were fortunate enough to knock down the foul shots."

Cleveland fought back within 46-44 on Andre Miller's jumper with 5:23 to go but Mashburn and rookie Jamaal Magloire scored six points each the rest of the period. In the quarter, Charlotte was 14-of-19 from the line while Cleveland was 2-of-2.

"I think we were a little more aggressive," Magloire said. "We were down after one and we knew we had to step it up."

Mashburn scored eight points in the third quarter as the Hornets built a 14-point lead before settling for an 83-70 advantage entering the final period.

Two free throws by Murray cut the deficit to 93-87 with 6:19 to play and Cleveland could have gotten closer. But P.J. Brown made a steal and fed David Wesley for a basket and Mashburn answered a free throw by Miller with a jumper for a 97-88 lead with 4:15 to play.

Wesley had 11 points and eight assists, Magloire scored 11 points and Brown added nine and seven rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 46 percent (36-of-79) and held a 40-32 rebounding edge.

Miller collected 17 points and nine assists for the Cavs, who shot 46 percent (35-of-76).
